¡Buenos días, Nocturnos! Espero que estén todos bien. Decidí hacer las cosas bien con esta saga y empezar por el inicio, además de que se trata de la Reina Grimhilde, mi bruja Disney favorita entre todas. Es la novela que nos revela el pasado de Su Majestad, La más bella del Reino: Una historia de la Reina Malvada, de Serena Valentino.

Todo el mundo conoce la historia de Blancanieves y de su malvada madrastra. Hay variaciones, sí, pero el cuento es prácticamente el mismo: una reina tan celosa de la belleza de una muchacha que intenta incluso quitarle la vida. Lo que casi nunca se cuenta, sin embargo, es cómo llegó la reina a convertirse en una mujer tan despiadada. Quizá siempre fue un ser horrible que consiguió engatusar a su marido. Otros dicen que el motivo por el que odiaba tanto a la muchacha era porque le recordaba demasiado a la primera esposa del rey. Teorías hay muchas y este libro explora una de ellas, jamás contada hasta la fecha. Esta es una historia de amor y de pérdida con un toque de magia. Esta es la historia de la Reina Malvada.

Casi todo el libro se trata de la vida de la Reina, al cual permanece sin nombre, y conocemos cómo el trauma, el abuso, el maltrato y desprecio la llevaron a un camino de ruina y desgracia que acabaría con ella. también conocemos a detalle la vida en el castillo, quiénes rodeaban a la Reina y cómo fue que se convirtió en la bruja que todos amamos amo.

Me sorprendió lo oscuro y a veces hasta violento que se vuelve el libro, considerando que es para niños. No hay nada muy sangriento o gráfico, pero sí hay algunas escenas subidas de tono. Esto le dio un toque mucho más interesante a la trama, la hizo más atractiva y recuperó el encanto de la película original, la cual dudo sería igual si la hicieran hoy en día. Grimhilde se destaca por su frialdad, y Serena Valentino la presenta muy bien.

Sin embargo, me quedé esperado sus diálogos más emblemáticos, frases que me hicieron tenerle pavor cuando era niño, y ni hablar del final catastrófico que le esperaba. No tiene sentido ese giro a último minuto en la psiquis de Grimhilde. No fue el caso, sino todo lo contrario. SPOILER luego de tomarse la poción de la hermanas. Se supone que no queda un ápice de bondad y arrepentimiento en ella, ¿y decide suicidarse? Lo siento, pero no, no lo creo. El ataque de histeria hubiese quedado perfecto sin la última intervención de las hermanas, y aún así había esperanza, pero que ella decidiera morir y cortar la escena en ese momento no funcionó para mí. La más bella del Reino: Una historia de la Reina Malvada es una historia llena de encanto pero que nos muestra el descenso a la locura de una mujer que solo quería amar y ser amada, una chica que buscó esperanza en cada rincón sin cansarse, pero cuyas heridas del pasado terminaron transformándola en la villa más peligrosa de todas. Una lectura llena de enseñanzas y moralejas perfecta para los niños más sádicos y con gustos más oscuros.

I decided to do things right with this saga and start at the beginning, plus it's about Queen Grimhilde, my favorite Disney witch (link only in Spanish) of all. It's the novel that reveals the past of Her Majesty, Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen, by Serena Valentino.

The tale of the young princess and her evil stepmother, the Wicked Queen, is widely known. Despite a few variations from telling to telling, the story remains the same—the Queen was jealous of the girl’s beauty, and this jealousy culminated in the Queen’s attempt on the sweet, naive girl’s life. Another tale far less often spoken of is the one that explains what caused the Queen to become so contemptuously vile. Still, some have attempted to guess at the reason. Perhaps the Queen’s true nature was that of a wicked hag and her beautiful, regal appearance a disguise used to fool the King. Others claim that the Queen might have hated the girl for her resemblance to the King’s first wife. Almost the entire book's about the Queen's life, during which she remains nameless, and we know how trauma, abuse, mistreatment and contempt led her to a path of ruin and disgrace that would end her. We also know in detail the life in the castle, who surrounded the Queen and how she became the witch we all I love.

I was surprised by how dark and sometimes even violent the book becomes, considering it is for children. There's nothing very bloody or graphic, but there are some racy scenes. This gave the plot a much more interesting touch, made it more attractive, and regained the charm of the original film, which I doubt would be the same if it were made today. Grimhilde stands out for her coldness, and Serena Valentino presents her very well.

However, I was waiting for her most emblematic dialogues, phrases that made me dread her as a child, not to mention the catastrophic ending that awaited her. It wasn't the case, but quite opposite. SPOILER That last-minute twist on Grimhilde's psyche makes no sense after taking the sisters' potion. There's not supposed to be an iota of kindness and regret left in her, and she decides to commit suicide? Sorry, but no, I don't think so. The hysterical attack would have been perfect without the sisters' last intervention, and still there was hope, but that she decided to die and cut the scene at that moment didn't work for me. Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen is a story full of charm but that shows us the descent into madness of a woman who only wanted to love and be loved, a girl who sought hope in every corner without getting tired, but whose past wounds ended up transforming her into the most dangerous villain of all. A reading full of teachings and morals perfect for the most sadistic children with darker tastes.
