Hace unos días estaba hablando con una amiga, y ella me preguntó cuál era mi género favorito. Parece una pregunta sencilla, pero me puse a pensar hasta darme cuenta de que no tengo uno en particular. Sé qué es lo que no me gusta, pero lo que sí disfruto es más difícil de describir. Porque decir "fantasía oscura" no es suficiente.
Me encantan los retellings porque soy amante del folklore y la mitología. Estos libros permiten ver diferentes significados e interpretaciones de estas historias ancestrales, además de que las mantienen presentes y vivas. Diferente autores añaden diferentes capas de significados a estas historias, algo que me parece fascinante, y siento que descubro más de mí mismo escribiendo en este género.
También disfruto el terror, pero no del gráfico que me habla de tripas, sangre, órganos volando por todos lados. Me gusta explorar el lado más oscuro de la psicología humana, los rincones más perversos de la mente, y lo que ello puede significar para nuestra sociedad. El terror ha sido un reflejo de lo que no nos gusta de nuestra realidas, de nosotros, y lo muestra bajo un lente exagerado, pero no por ello menos real.
Finalmente, está la fantasía, una tergiversación de la realidad en donde todo es posible, pero que tiene cierta lógica, cierta forma, en donde aún así hay reglas. Lo sorprendente es que, a pesar de ello, nos permite escapar de la realidad en la que vivimos. La entendemos y la experimentamos de otra manera a través de este género.
La más reciente adición a la lista es la poesía. Hace poco volví a leerla, y me sumergí de una manera más intensa que nunca antes. Descubrí que es más emocional, más experimental, y que hay una clase diferente de libertad en sus diferentes formatos, cada uno con sus propias reglas. Para mí, la poesía se convirtió en un lenguaje para darle forma y voz a los sentimientos más abstractos que experimento.
También leo libros de folklore, de mitología, de brujería, autobiografías, de humor, cómics, mangas, incluso erótica, pero estos son los que visito más a menudo y que me interesan reseñar aquí. Me considero un lector bastante promiscuo, pasando por etapas en donde se me antoja una cosa muy específica, para pasar a otra, y otra, y así sucesivamente.
A few days ago I was talking with a friend, and she asked me what my favorite genre was. It seems like a simple question, but I got to thinking until I realized that I don't have one in particular. I know what I don't like, but what I do enjoy is harder to describe. Because saying "dark fantasy" is not enough.
I love retellings because I'm a lover of folklore and mythology. These books allow to see different meanings and interpretations of these ancestral stories, in addition to keeping them present and alive. Different authors add different layers of meaning to these stories, which I find fascinating, and I feel like I discover more of myself writing in this genre.
I also enjoy the horror, but not the graphic that tells me about guts, blood, organs flying everywhere. I like to explore the darker side of human psychology, the wickeder corners of the mind, and what this can mean for our society. Terror has been a reflection of what we don't like about our reality, about ourselves, and it shows it under an exaggerated lens, but no less real for that.
Finally, there is fantasy, a misrepresentation of reality where everything is possible, but which has a certain logic, a certain form, where there are still rules. The surprising thing is that, despite this, it allows us to escape from the reality in which we live. We understand it and experience it in another way through this genre.
The most recent addition to the list is poetry. I recently read it again, and I was immersed in it more intensely than ever before. I found that it's more emotional, more experimental, and that there's a different kind of freedom in its different formats, each with its own rules. For me, poetry became a language to give shape and voice to the most abstract feelings I experience.
I also read books on folklore, mythology, witchcraft, autobiographies, humor, comics, manga, even erotica, but these are the ones that I visit most often and that I'm interested in reviewing here. I consider myself a fairly promiscuous reader, going through stages where a very specific thing strikes me, to move on to another, and another, and so on.
