¿Sexo en Novelas Juveniles? / Sex in Young Adult Novels?

Books show reality, and the reality is that for a long time adolescents “do things”.

A few days ago, I saw something that seems to worry some people. YA novels now include sex. And is that supposed to be a problem? I have a different opinion: it seems to me that they do not stray from reality, and that is just what books do.

I have seen negative comments about it, which makes no sense to me. Teenagers having sex is nothing new. I'm 27, almost 28, and at 13, in my first year of high school, several of my classmates started talking about how they lost their virginity. Is that alright? No, but it happened and is still happening. Many of my friends had their first time at 17 or even earlier.

If it sounds unreal, and I can understand it does, a study found that many lose their virginity between the ages of 16 and 18, focusing on the US, the UK, Australia, France, Italy, Norway, and Switzerland. Another study covered 37 countries and gave similar results, with countries like Brazil, Colombia, Austria, Germany, Russia, among others, where the average age is 17 years.

What does this mean? That many have already had some kind of experience before the age of 18. Plus, it's irrational to believe that everyone stays chaste and pure through high school, and we all know what that means: Many experiment with their sexuality during those years.

So is it problematic that YA novels talk about sex? No, as long as it is not erotic, vulgar, explicit content, or anything similar, but like any other means of information, whether fictional or not, books show reality, and the reality is that for a long time adolescents “do things”.

If it weren't like that, shows like 16 and Pregnant or Teen Mom wouldn't exist, nor would I have started writing a novel with an erotic scene at 17.
