Volví a salir de mi zona de comodidad. Esta vez, me atreví con una novela en verso que toca el tema de los niños trans. No sabía que esperar, pero la idea me pareció lo suficientemente original como para darle una oportunidad, y terminé sorprendido por lo mucho que me encantó. Literalmente, me costó soltarla para ponerme a hacer otras cosas. Se trata de Dear Mothman, de Robin Gow.

La conmovedora novela en verso de grado medio del poeta y autor Robin Gow, Dear Mothman, trata sobre un joven trans que lidia con la pérdida de su amigo al escribirle a su críptido favorito.

A la mitad del sexto grado, el mejor amigo de Noah y el único otro chico trans en su escuela, Lewis, falleció en un accidente automovilístico. Aventurero y curioso, Lewis siempre traía una nueva historia paranormal para compartir con Noah. Juntos soñaron despiertos con los críptidos y compartieron el descubrimiento de sus géneros y nombres.

Después de la muerte de Lewis, solo y anhelando a alguien que pudiera entenderlo como Lewis lo hizo una vez, Noah comienza a escribirle cartas a Mothman, preguntándose si entendería cómo se siente Noah y también buscando evidencia de la existencia de Mothman en los vastos bosques que rodean su pequeño pueblo de Poconos... Noah se decide a hacer su proyecto de feria de ciencias sobre Mothman, a pesar de que sus maestros y padres lo instan a hacer un proyecto sobre algo "real".

Pero cuando comienzan a suceder cosas extrañas y Noah se asegura de la existencia de Mothman, sus padres y maestros no le creen. Noah decide que depende de él arriesgarlo todo, caminar por el bosque y encontrar al propio Mothman.

¡Este libro fue hermoso! ¡No solo por los temas, la historia, los personajes, sino también por el estilo! Leí una novela en verso no hace mucho y fue... de calidad cuestionable. ¿Pero esto? Esto es algo sorprendente que muchos deberían leer debido a lo excelente que fue ejecutado. Y sí, estoy emocionado, soy un fanático, y no voy a pedir perdón por ello.

El hecho de que se haya publicado ahora, cuando hay un gran debate aquí en los EE. UU. sobre si los niños saben o no si son trans es aún mejor, especialmente porque está escrito por un autor trans que no se detiene para retratar lo que se siente como un niño trans con sus propias experiencias. Las descripciones son precisas, el estilo es hermoso y el desarrollo es sorprendente.

Diría que la inclusión de dibujos y diferentes puntos de vista hacen que la lectura sea aún más inmersiva, especialmente por la fuente utilizada en diferentes cartas. Ya pueden notar que no veo fallas en este libro, y creo que ustedes tampoco lo harán, porque es una historia que te atrapa desde el principio, te lleva a un viaje salvaje lleno de sorpresas y te deja en un lugar diferente que, por alguna razón, se siente familiar.

Dear Mothman es uno de esos pocos libros que recuperan la inocencia de un niño para mostrarla, devolverla sin condiciones, tan pura y natural que te deja con una sonrisa en la cara cuando llegas a la última página. Es hermoso, dulce, pero también real, lo suficiente como para hacerte pensar dos veces sobre lo que darías por sentado y lo que considerarías "normal" o "natural".

I got out of my comfort zone again. This time, I dared with a novel in verse that touches on the issue of trans children. I didn't know what to expect, but the idea seemed original enough for me to give it a try, and I ended up surprised by how much I loved it. I literally had a hard time stopping to start doing other things. It's Dear Mothman, by Robin Gow.

Poet and author Robin Gow’s moving middle-grade novel in verse Dear Mothman is about a young trans boy dealing with the loss of his friend by writing to his favorite cryptid.

Halfway through sixth grade, Noah’s best friend and the only other trans boy in his school, Lewis, passed away in a car accident. Adventurous and curious, Lewis was always bringing a new paranormal story to share with Noah. Together they daydreamed about cryptids and shared discovering their genders and names.

After Lewis’s death, lonely and yearning for someone who could understand him like Lewis once did, Noah starts writing letters to Mothman, wondering if he would understand how Noah feels and also looking for evidence of Mothman’s existence in the vast woods surrounding his small Poconos town. Noah becomes determined to make his science fair project about Mothman, despite his teachers and parents urging him to make a project about something “real.”

Meanwhile, as Noah tries to find Mothman, he also starts to make friends with a group of girls in his grade, Hanna, Molly, and Alice, with whom he’d been friendly, but never close to. Now, they welcome him, and he starts to open up to each of them, especially Hanna, whom Noah has a crush on. But as strange things start to happen and Noah becomes sure of Mothman’s existence, his parents and teachers don’t believe him. Noah decides it’s up to him to risk everything, trek into the woods, and find Mothman himself.

This book was gorgeous! Not only because of the topics, the story, the characters, but also because of the style! I read a novel in verse not long ago and it was... of questionable quality. But this? This is an amazing thing that many should read because of how excellently it was executed. And yes, I'm hyped, I'm a fanboy, and I'm not gonna say sorry because of it.

The fact that it was published now, when there's such a huge debate here in the US regarding whether or not kids know if they are trans is even better, especially because it's written by a trans author who doesn't hold back to portray what it feels like to be a trans kid with of his own experiences. The descriptions are on point, the style is beautiful, and the development is amazing.

I would say that the inclusion of drawings and different points of view make the reading all the more immersive, especially because of the font used in different letters. You can notice already that I don't see any flaws in this book, and I don't think you will either, because it's a story that grabs you from the beginning, takes you on a wild ride full of surprises, and leaves you in a different place that, for some reason, feels familiar.

Dear Mothman is one of those few books that recover the innocence of being a kid to show it, give it back with no conditions, so pure and natural, that it leaves you with a smile on your face when you reach the final page. It's beautiful, sweet, but also real, enough to make you think twice about what you would take for granted, and what you would consider "normal" or "natural".
