Imaginar algo diferente, una historia que cree su propia mitología y sus propias reglas parece ser algo difícil, una misión imposible. No obstante, Watersnakes, de Tony Sandoval, logró alcanzar tal objetivo. Con una propuesta siniestra y un desarrollo maestral, esta novela gráfica se vuelve adictiva desde el primer capítulo.

Mila es una adolescente solitaria dispuesta a dejar atrás otras aburridas vacaciones de verano hasta que conoce a Agnes, una chica aventurera que resulta ser un fantasma. Y no solo un fantasma normal, sino uno que lleva la esencia de un antiguo rey caído y una boca llena de dientes que solían ser sus guerreros guardianes.

La propuesta de Watersnakes podría parecer rebuscada en un primer momento, pero el autor logra desarrollarla para volverla entretenida, homogénea y fluida. Tanto Mila como Agnes tienen una personalidad bien marcada, al igual que los pocos personajes secundarios que aparecen a lo largo de la novela, haciendo de esta una lectura amena.

No niego que me habría gustado un poco más de desarrollo, más contexto e historia previa para saber con exactitud qué había pasado antes de los eventos en este libro, pero Tony Sandoval recupera el encanto de los cuentos de hadas antiguos, aquellos en donde los detalles faltantes, lejos de molestar, más bien nos hacen soñar. El libro combina los cuentos para niños con los terrores infantiles para crear un universo tan mágico como sanguinario.

Watersnakes propone un estilo minimalista con toques tétricos en su arte. Las páginas están divididas en los clásicos páneles cuadrados y rectangulares, resaltando la fantasía surreal y el horror que se desenvuelven capítulo tras capítulo. La paleta de colores, casi monocromática, ayuda a sumergirse mucho más en este mundo tétrico que ha creado su autor.

Admito que es el primer libro que leo de Tony Sandoval, pero me ha dejado tan buena impresión que sin dudas volveré a darle la oportunidad cuando vea algo nuevo de él o si encuentro algún trabajo previo a Watersnakes. Pocas veces encuentras una historia tan creativa y oscura como esta. Encantadora.

Mila is a solitary teenager ready to put another boring summer vacation behind her until she meets Agnes, an adventurous girl who turns out to be a ghost. And not just a regular ghost, but one carrying the essence of an ancient fallen king and a mouth full of teeth that used to be his guardian warriors.

The proposal of Watersnakes could seem gimmicky at first, but the author manages to develop it to make it entertaining, homogeneous and fluid. Both Mila and Agnes have a well-defined personality, as well as the few secondary characters that appear throughout the novel, making this an enjoyable reading.

I don't deny that I would have liked a little more development, more context and previous history to know exactly what had happened before the events in this book, but Tony Sandoval recovers the charm of the ancient fairy tales, those where the missing details, far from bothering, rather make us dream. The book combines the magic of childhood stories and combines it with childhood nightmares to create a universe as magical as bloodthirsty.

Watersnakes proposes a minimalist style with gloomy touches in its art. The pages are divided into classic square and rectangular panels, highlighting the surreal fantasy and horror that unfold chapter after chapter. The color palette, almost monochromatic, helps to immerse yourself much more in this gloomy world created by its author.

I admit that this is the first book I read from Tony Sandoval, but it has left me with such a good impression that I will undoubtedly give him the opportunity when I sees something new from him or if I find some work prior to Watersnakes. Seldom do you find a story as creative and obscure as this one. Charming.
