Manga: Boys Run the Riot Vol. 1

Buenos días, Nocturnos. ^^ ¿Qué tal les va en la semana? Hoy vengo con una super noticia, y es que recibí un manga gratuito por parte de Kodansha, KODANSHA, otro de los gigantes del mundo del manga y anime. Dudé muchísimo de que pudiera pasar cuando pedí la copia, pero ya me doy cuenta de que los sueños sí se van volviendo realidad. En esta ocasión, vengo con la reseña de Boys Run the Riot Vol. 1, por Keito Gaku. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme un ejemplar a través de NetGalley a cambio de una reseña honesta!

Un adolescente transgénero llamado Ryo encuentra un escape de las expectativas y ansiedades de su vida diaria en el mundo de la moda callejera. Esta historia personal, sincera y ficticia de un creador de manga transgénero causó sensación en Japón e inspirará a lectores de todo el mundo.

EN LAS COSTURAS

El estudiante de secundaria Ryo sabe que es transgénero, pero no tiene a nadie en quien confiar sobre la confusión que siente. No puede decirle a su mejor amiga, de quien está secretamente enamorado, y no puede decírselo a su madre, quien constantemente pregunta por qué Ryo "se viste como un niño". Ciertamente no se lo puede decir a Jin, el nuevo estudiante transferido que parece un matón más... La única vez que Ryo se siente cómodo es cuando está usando su ropa favorita. Entonces, y solo entonces, el mundo se desvanece y él puede ser su verdadero yo. Un día, mientras estaba de compras, Ryo ve a alguien que no esperaba: Jin. ¡El chico que parecía tan rudo en clase tiene el mismo gusto en moda que él! Por fin, Ryo tiene a alguien con quien puede abrirse, y el viaje por delante podría finalmente darle una manera de expresarse al mundo.

La historia sí empieza muy enfocada en los problemas de Ryo por ser un estudiante transgénero, tanto en la escuela como en casa, pero va mucho más allá y toca temas adolescentes como lo son la autoestima, la confianza, la identidad, la familia, los lazos amistosos, y la personalidad. Se lee mucho más rápido de lo que uno esperaría de un manga por lo sencillo del estilo, lo cual es otro punto a favor.

Boys Run the Riot Vol. 1 cuenta con personajes muy completos, una historia sólida, y un estilo que enamora a cualquiera. El desarrollo es bastante rápido, a veces un poco más de lo que debería si me preguntan, con cambios drásticos en los personajes que podrían haber esperado un poco, pero funciona muy bien de alguna manera.

Con lo que sí tuve algunos problemas fue con el arte, y solo en algunas ocasiones. No soy muy fanático del espacio negativo, los espacios en blanco, y Keito Gaku los usa varias veces en este manga. También hubo algunas expresiones faciales que me parecieron exageradas, quizá porque las escenas son justo aquellas en donde se dan los cambios que mencionaba. Pienso que de haber esperado un poco más, y de haber suavizado las expresiones, habría funcionado muy bien, pero en general el resultado no te saca de la lectura.

Quitando esos detalles de lado, es inegable que Boys Run the Riot Vol. 1 es un manga excelente. La historia te atrapa, los problemas de Ryo se vuelven los tuyos, y te metes muy dentro de él y sus sentimientos. También disfruté muchísimo con la entrevista a Keito Gaku al final, en donde contó muchísimas cosas relacionadas a este manga. Gaku hizo un muy buen trabajo con esta historia dramática. Trabajó varios temas de manera sencilla, pero mostrando también lo serios que son y que siempre hay una luz al final del camino.

High schooler Ryo knows he’s transgender, but he doesn’t have anyone to confide in about the confusion he feels. He can’t tell his best friend, who he’s secretly got a crush on, and he can’t tell his mom, who’s constantly asking why Ryo “dresses like a boy.” He certainly can’t tell Jin, the new transfer student who looks like just another bully… The only time Ryo feels at ease is when he’s wearing his favorite clothes. Then, and only then, the world melts away, and he can be his true self. One day, while out shopping, Ryo sees someone he didn’t expect: Jin. The kid who looked so tough in class has the same taste in fashion as him! At last, Ryo has someone he can open up to—and the journey ahead might finally give him a way to express himself to the world.

The story does start out very focused on Ryo's problems for being a transgender student, both at school and at home, but it goes much further and touches on adolescent issues such as self-esteem, confidence, identity, family, friendly ties, and personality. It reads much faster than one would expect from a manga due to the simplicity of the style, which is another point in its favor.

Boys Run the Riot Vol. 1 has very complete characters, a solid story, and a style that will make anyone fall in love. Development is pretty fast, sometimes a bit more than it should be if you ask me, with drastic character changes that might have been a bit expected, but it works great somehow.

What I did have some problems with was with art, and only on some occasions. I'm not a big fan of negative space, white space, and Keito Gaku uses them several times in this manga. There were also some facial expressions that seemed exaggerated to me, perhaps because the scenes are just those where the changes I mentioned take place. I think that if it taken a bit longer, and if the expressions had been smoothed, it would have worked very well, but in general the result doesn't take you out of reading.

Taking those details aside, it's undeniable that Boys Run the Riot Vol. 1 is an excellent manga. The story grabs you, Ryo's problems become yours, and you get deep inside him and his feelings. I also enjoyed a lot the interview with Keito Gaku at the end, where he told many things related to this manga. Gaku did a very good job with this dramatic story. He worked on various themes in a simple way, but also showing how serious they are and that there's always a light at the end of the road.
