Buenos días, Nocturnos. ¿Cómo inició la semana para ustedes? Yo estoy esperando ansioso el lanzamiento de Los Colores de la Muerte (¿ya pidieron su copia en preventa?), y tengo tantas ideas y planes en la cabeza que a veces necesito despegarme de la computadora porque me saturo. Sin embargo, seguimos en el Mes del Orgullo, y hay un tema del que necesito hablar urgentemente porque lo veo cada vez más presente y sin muchos argumentos: la diversidad sexual en niños y que ellos son "muy jóvenes para entender de eso". Vamos a ir por partes.
En 2013, cuando se estrenó Frozen, se armó toda una controversia (solo en inglés) alrededor de si Elsa era lesbiana o no, y muchos iniciaron campañas pidiendo "Una Novia para Elsa" #GiveElsaAGirlfriend, en la segunda película. Muchos se descontentaron al ver que no fue así, pero leí en una página (si alguien la encuentra, por favor avíseme y coloco el enlace) que Disney aplicó un examen de desarrollo de personaje a Elsa, determinando que ella no estaba lista para tener ningún tipo de relación romántica, y que todas las preguntas que quedaron sin respuesta en la primera película fueron respondidas en la segunda, así que de darle un novio o novia sería en una tercera entrega.
Sin embargo, muchos criticaron esto diciendo que sería acondicionar a los niños a pensar que tienen que ser LGBT+ y que ver un personaje LGBT+ puede confundirlos. Como le dije a un amigo, ¿un único personaje va a confundir a toda una generación? Más aún, con tantos personajes heterosexuales en televisión, videojuegos, videos musicales, películas, libros, y cómics, ¿solo un personaje va a convertir a todos los niños en LGBT+?
Sí se van a formular muchas preguntas, sí van a haber conversaciones al respecto, pero los niños no son tontos. Muchos se dan cuenta de su identidad desde temprana edad. Kim Petras es un ejemplo de ello: aunque nació siendo niño, a los cinco años se dio cuenta de que realmente era niña, empezó tratamiento hormonal a los 12, y tuvo su cirugía de afirmación de género a los 16, siendo la persona más joven del mundo en pasar por dicha experiencia. Jazz Jennings, de la serie Yo Soy Jazz, también fue diagnosticada con Disforia de Género en Niños (DGN) a los cinco años.

Es un diagnóstico formal para los niños que experimentan un descontento significativo (disforia de género) debido a un desajuste entre su sexo asignado y su identidad de género. La etiqueta diagnóstica "trastorno de identidad de género en niños" (TIGN) fue utilizada por el Manual Diagnóstico y Estadístico de Trastornos Mentales hasta que fue rebautizada como disforia de género en niños en 2013 con el lanzamiento del DSM-5. Se cambió el nombre del diagnóstico para eliminar el estigma asociado con el término trastorno.
Ahora, me llama mucho la atención que "la disforia de género en los niños está más ligada a la homosexualidad adulta que a una identidad transgénero adulta, especialmente en lo que respecta a los niños" según los estudios, todos en inglés, Disforia de género y trastornos del desarrollo sexual: avances en la atención y el conocimiento (página 61), La base médica de la psiquiatría (página 302) y Gay, Hétero, y la razón: La ciencia de la orientación sexual (página 91; que es de la Universidad de Oxford).
Otros estudios confirman que en la mayoría de los casos, el deseo de ser del otro sexo termina en la pubertad y los ahora adolescentes se identifican como gays, lesbianas, o bisexuales, independientemente de su hubo intervención terapéutica o no. Algunos son Endocrinología de adultos y niños: endocrinología reproductiva (página 483), Libro electrónico de lo Esencial de Pediatría de Nelson (página 75), y el Libro de texto de Dulcan de psiquiatría infantil y adolescente, segunda edición (página 591, publicado por la Asociación Estadounidense de Psiquiatría).
Los niños saben, los niños entienden, los niños preguntan, y si los adultos no responden, los niños buscan la manera de dar con respuestas. Muchas veces es difícil, muchas veces no saben por dónde empezar, y muchísimas veces cometen errores, pero también hay veces en que dan con la información correcta, como pasó con Kim y Jazz.
Volvamos a lo que decíamos al principio, la idea de que los niños se van a confundir si ven un personaje LGBT+ y dejarán de ser heterosexuales. Si esto fuera así, entonces todos los humanos en la tierra deben ser heterosexuales porque por muchos años no hubo ni mención de la diversidad sexual en los medios de comunicación, y luego se la condenó científica y religiosamente. Puedo entender que sea un tema incómodo, complejo, y extenso para muchos, y es más fácil ignorarlo, pero no quiere decir que sea la postura correcta. No soy nadie para decirle a alguien cómo criar a sus hijos, eso es responsabilidad de los padres, pero sí es mi responsabilidad como comunicador dar la información tal y como es.

I'm anxiously awaiting the launch of Los Colores de la Muerte (have you already ordered your copy in pre-order?), and I have so many ideas and plans in my head that sometimes I need to detach myself from the computer because I get saturated. However, we're still in Pride Month, and there's a topic that I urgently need to talk about because I see it more and more present and without many arguments: sexual diversity in children and that they are "too young to understand that." Let's go by parts.
In 2013, when Frozen was released, there was a whole controversy around whether Elsa was a lesbian or not, and many started campaigns to #GiveElsaAGirlfriend in the second film. Many were displeased to see that it didn't happen, but I read on a page (if anyone finds it, please let me know and I'll put the link) that Disney applied a character development test to Elsa, determining that she was not ready to have any kind of romantic relationship, and that all the questions that were left unanswered in the first movie were answered in the second, so giving her a boyfriend or girlfriend would be in a third installment.
However, many criticized this saying that it would be conditioning children to think that they have to be LGBT+ and that seeing an LGBT+ character can confuse them. Like I told a friend, is a single character going to confuse an entire generation? Furthermore, with so many straight characters on television, video games, music videos, movies, books, and comics, is just one character going to make all children become LGBT+?
Yes, there are going to be a lot of questions, there are going to be conversations about it, but children are not stupid. Many realize their identity from an early age. Kim Petras is an example of this: although she was born as a boy, at the age of five she realized that she was really a girl, began hormonal treatment at 12, and had her gender affirmation surgery at 16, being the youngest person of the world to go through such an experience. Jazz Jennings, from the series I Am Jazz, was also diagnosed with Gender Dysphoria in Children (GDC) at age five.

Is a formal diagnosis for children who experience significant discontent (gender dysphoria) due to a mismatch between their assigned sex and gender identity. The diagnostic label gender identity disorder in children (GIDC) was used by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) until it was renamed gender dysphoria in children in 2013 with the release of the DSM-5. The diagnosis was renamed to remove the stigma associated with the term disorder.
Now, it strikes me that "gender dysphoria in children is more heavily linked to adult homosexuality than to an adult transgender identity, especially with regard to boys", according to the studies Gender Dysphoria and Disorders of Sex Development: Progress in Care and Knowledge (page 61), The Medical Basis of Psychiatry (page 302), and Gay, Straight, and the Reason Why: The Science of Sexual Orientation (page 91; which is from Oxford University).
Other studies confirm that in most cases, the desire to be of the other sex ends at puberty and now adolescents identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, regardless of whether there was therapeutic intervention or not. Children know, children understand, children ask, and if adults do not answer, children look for a way to come up with answers. Many times it is difficult, many times they do not know where to start, and many times they make mistakes, but there are also times when they find the correct information, as happened with Kim and Jazz.
Let's go back to what we said at the beginning, the idea that children are going to be confused if they see an LGBT+ character and they will stop being heterosexual. If this were so, then all humans on earth must be heterosexual because for many years there was no mention of sexual diversity in the media, and then it was scientifically and religiously condemned. I can understand that it's an uncomfortable, complex, and extensive topic for many, and it's easier to ignore it, but it does not mean that it is the correct position. I'm not someone to tell someone how to raise their children, that is the responsibility of the parents, but it is my responsibility as a communicator to give the information as it is.
