He estado leyendo este libro sin parar desde que lo obtuve, y fue tan adictivo, tan inmersivo, pulido y perfecto y OMG que debo recomendarlo a todos. Si quieren un tipo de fantasía diferente, algo oscuro pero dulce, una saga familiar que los deje sin aliento, tienen que leer The Jinn Daughter, por Rania Hanna. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Nadine es una jinn que tiene la tarea de contar las historias de los muertos. Se levanta cada mañana para recoger las semillas de granada, las almas de los muertos, que han caído durante la noche. Con su hija Layala a su lado, come las semillas y cuenta sus historias. Sólo entonces los difuntos podrán atravesar la puerta final de la muerte.

Pero cuando las semillas dejan de caer, Nadine se da cuenta de que algo anda terriblemente mal. Todos sus peores temores se confirman cuando recibe la visita de Kamuna, la propia Muerte y gobernante del inframundo, quien le revela su deseo de que alguien la reemplace: es a Layala a quien quiere.

Nadine hará lo que sea necesario para mantener a su hija a salvo, pero Kamuna tiene poca paciencia y un impulso despiadado para conseguir lo que ha venido a buscar. Mientras tanto, el destino de Layala está en juego.

Arraigada en la mitología del Medio Oriente, Rania Hanna teje hábilmente una magia sutil, pero impresionante, a través de esta vívida y convincente historia que tiene en su centro el deseo humano universal de, de alguna manera, superar a la muerte.

Recién estamos comenzando el mes de la herencia árabe-estadounidense, por lo que el momento para esta novela no podría ser más perfecto. Nadine es un personaje asombroso con diferentes rostros, tan humana que duele ver sus luchas, sus peleas, su dolor, haciendo imposible no simpatizar con ella. ¡Es uno de los mejores personajes que he leído hasta ahora!

El estilo de Rania también está pulido a la perfección. Lírico, descriptivo, evocador, pero muy fácil de seguir y comprender, utiliza descripciones creativas que no sólo ayudan a sentir lo que está sucediendo, sino que también te envuelven en la atmósfera de todo. También rinde homenaje a Las Noches Árabes de una manera natural, añadiendo aún más encanto a la novela. Esto da como resultado una Shahrazad moderna de la que ya soy fanático.

Los altibajos de la historia influyen hasta cierto punto en el ritmo, pero no deja de ser una historia rápida, no porque haya sensación de urgencia, sino gracias a la mano de la autora, que fluye magistralmente a través de los capítulos. Se cuidaron hasta los detalles más pequeños, y si bien el final es abierto, con suficiente potencial para una secuela, es lo suficientemente sólido como para decir que no lo necesita.

Refrescante y creativa, rebosante de emoción e imágenes vívidas, The Jinn Daughter es una novela que apunta alto para ofrecer eso y más. Rania Hanna ha comenzado brillantemente su carrera como escritora, también en una época en la que Oriente Medio ha atraído mucha atención. Recomiendo muchísimo este libro si quieren un tipo diferente de fantasía mientras exploran el significado de la muerte en la vida humana.

I've been reading this book non-stop since I got it, and it was so addictive, so immersive, polished, and perfect and OMG that I must recommend it to everyone. Nadine is a jinn tasked with one job: telling the stories of the dead. She rises every morning to gather pomegranate seeds—the souls of the dead—that have fallen during the night. With her daughter Layala at her side, she eats the seeds and tells their stories. Only then can the departed pass through the final gate of death.

But when the seeds stop falling, Nadine knows something is terribly wrong. All her worst fears are confirmed when she is visited by Kamuna, Death herself and ruler of the underworld, who reveals her desire for someone to replace her: it is Layala she wants.

Nadine will do whatever it takes to keep her daughter safe, but Kamuna has little patience and a ruthless drive to get what she has come for. Layala’s fate, meanwhile, hangs in the balance.

Rooted in Middle Eastern mythology, Rania Hanna deftly weaves subtle, yet breathtaking, magic through this vivid and compelling story that has at its heart the universal human desire to, somehow, outmaneuver death.

We're just starting Arab American Heritage month, so the timing for this novel couldn't be more perfect. Nadine is an amazing character with different faces, so human that it hurts to see her struggles, her fights, her grief, making it impossible not to sympathize with her. She is one of the best characters I've read so far!

Rania's style is also polished to perfection. Lyrical, descriptive, evocative, yet so easy to follow and understand, she uses creative descriptions that, not only help you feel what's going on, but also wrap you in the atmosphere of it all. She also honors The Arabian Nights in a natural way, adding even more charm to the novel. This results in a modern Shahrazad which I'm already a fan of.

The ups and downs of the story influence the pace to a degree, but it's still a fast story, not because there's a sense of urgency, but thanks to the author's hand, flowing masterfully through the chapters. Even the smallest details were taken care of, and while the ending is open, with enough potential for a sequel, it's solid enough to say it does not need it.

Refreshing and creative, overflown with emotion and vivid imagery, The Jinn Daughter is a novel that aims high just to deliver as much and then some. Rania Hanna has brilliantly started her writing career, also during a time when the Middle East has garnered a lot of attention. I highly recommend this book if you want a different kind of fantasy while exploring the meaning of death in human life.
