¡Buen día, nocturnos! Espero que estén muy bien. Yo por mi parte cometí la locura de pedir libros hasta decir basta. No sé cómo haré, pero ya que últimamente llevo una dieta a base de libros… Who cares? En fin, hace poco terminé de leer Asperfell, de Jamie Thomas, una novela gótica que me puso a dudar mucho con cada capítulo, y que me sorprendió aún más al terminar.

La historia nos presenta a Briony Tenebrae, la indómita hija de una familia noble bajo la protección de la corona de Iluviel, un reino en donde poseer magia será sinónimo de peligro y rechazo luego de que el hijo mayor del rey sea condenado a Asperfell, la prisión multidimensional de la cual ningún mago ha vuelto, luego de supuestamente asesinar a su padre. Con el tiempo, Briony sospecha que algo no anda bien en el castillo, hasta que un día le dicen que su familia ha sido condenada por el ahora monarca y que ella también posee magia. Aunque es condenada a la muerte, la rebelión la ayuda a escapar… hacia Asperger, y con la misión de traer de vuelta al verdadero rey.

Esta es una novela con un ritmo muy pausado, llena de descripciones y detalles que te sumergen en el mundo oscuro creado por Jamie Thomas. Es una historia que so muestra lo peor que puede pasar cuando una sociedad se deja dominar por el miedo, los estigmas y los prejuicios, con personajes tan humanos que sientes su dolor en carne viva.

Debo admitir que más de una vez quise abandonar la lectura porque no entendía hacia dónde se dirigía, porque las escenas se volvían cada vez más largas, a pesar de lo interesantes que eran, hasta que caí en cuenta de que es una novela para un público adulto. Debí haberme dado cuenta al ver el lenguaje arcaico, medieval, pero la magia de Asperfell es así de sutil: Te enamora sin que te des cuenta.

Tenía mis dudas con respecto a esta novela. Jamie Thomas estaba extendiéndose demasiado en subtramas y detalles, al punto de que no entendía hacia dónde quería llegar. Cuando me di cuenta de que tenía que ser el primer libro de una saga, porque de otra forma no tendría sentido, me dejé de preocupar. Y en efecto, el final fue tan abierto (casi al punto de dejarme insatisfecho) que estoy ansioso por ver cómo sigue.
Asperfell es una novela que me costó leer porque tanto la portada como la sinopsis me hicieron creer que era una historia juvenil, pero resultó ser un mundo tan bien construido que es imposible no amarla. Tiene un encanto que te atrapa y no te deja ir hasta que terminas, dejándote con ganas de más.

The story introduces us to Briony Tenebrae, the untamed daughter of a noble family under the protection of the crown of Iluviel, a kingdom where possessing magic will be synonymous with danger and rejection after the king's eldest son is sentenced to Asperfell, the Multidimensional prison from which no magician has returned, after allegedly murdering his father. Over time, Briony suspects that something is wrong with the castle, until one day she is told that her family has been condemned by the now monarch and that she also possesses magic. Although she is condemned to death, the rebellion helps her escape... towards Asperger, and with the mission of bringing back the true king.

This is a novel with a very slow pace, full of descriptions and details that immerse you in the dark world created by Jamie Thomas. It's a story that shows the worst that can happen when a society is dominated by fear, stigma and prejudice, with characters so human that you feel their pain raw.
People will always be afraid, and they will always find someone to blame. Someday, all of this will happen again. That I promise you.
I must admit that more than once I wanted to abandon the reading because I didn't understand where it was going, because the scenes became increasingly long, despite how interesting they were, until I realized that it's intended for an adult audience. I should have noticed when I saw the archaic, medieval language, but the magic of Asperfell is as subtle as that: you fall in love without realizing it.

I had my doubts regarding this novel. Jamie Thomas was getting too long on subplots and details, to the point that I didn't understand where she wanted to go. When I realized that it had to be the first book in a saga, because otherwise it wouldn't make sense, I stopped worrying. And indeed, the ending was so open (almost to the point of leaving me unsatisfied) that I'm eager to know how it goes on.
Asperfell is a novel that I had a hard time reading because both the cover and the synopsis led me to believe that it was a Young-Adult story, but it turned out to be a world so well built that it's impossible not to love it. It has a charm that catches you and doesn't let you go until you finish, leaving you wanting for more.
