One of my favorite albums turned 10 years old this month—one of those that gave you chills down your spine the first time you listened to it because of its powerful, mythical sound. That fanboy-ish response is inspired by metal band Kamelot’s eighth studio release, GHOST OPERA.

After the two conceptual albums EPICA and THE BLACK HALO, based on Goethe’s FAUST, the band went for a more traditional approach, mixing different ideas and topics in one terrific collection that incorporates opera structure, neoclassical-symphonic style and dark, seductive lyrics, releasing it to the world in early June 2007. GHOST OPERA opens with the Arabic-esque sounds of “Solitaire” and “Rule the World,” a dream of dark romance in the sands of the Middle East, before honoring its name and going all epic with haunting, electronic additions, beginning with the third, titular track. Roy Khan’s voice is aural poetry, caressing the listener’s ear on all these tracks, matching the instrumental style with an almost perfect softness, only broken when a more direct, heavier tone is required for songs like “The Human Stain” and “Up Through the Ashes.”

GHOST OPERA offers a solid structure, each song seeming to be a sequel to the previous one, purposely varying for only a couple of seconds before returning to the glory they mean to capture. Oliver Palotai takes care of the wondrous keyboards, while the orchestrations and choir add a singular taste to an already solid work of sonic art. Vocalists Simone Simons and Amanda Somerville also make strong contributions to many tracks, adding their enchanting tones to create a more complex, complete universe devoted to mighty quests and love stories. Less is more, and even amazing in the case of “Love You to Death” and “Blücher.”

Exploring their different sides on this album, Kamelot includes tracks that could be seen as representing completely different genres. Examples are “Mourning Star,” a dark metal ballad, and “Silence of the Darkness,” which offers a strange mix of power and speed metal, enhanced by a touch of what could be considered electronic (maybe folk?) metal, before going back to their neoclassical sound in “Anthem,” exemplifying the band’s versatility. Between the different editions of the original album, I must say I prefer the Japanese release, which includes the bewitching ballad “Season’s End,” over the standard metal- arranged bonus track on the Limited Edition, “The Pendulous Fall,” as “End” provides a more fitting closer, a memorable final song that resounds in your ears after it’s over.

One can easily say that this was the album that gave a new form and shape to Kamelot, as it was far from the typically fast style that first gave them their fame. Its more complex structures and darker, Gothic lyrics would become the norm in subsequent albums like HAVEN and SILVERTHORN.
