Enna es una chica que vive a las afueras de una ciudad con su padre enfermizo, un hombre mayor que pierde la noción de la realidad con cada día que pasa, lo cual ha hecho que su hija se responsabilice por los quehaceres de la casa, las compras, y proteger su hogar de los engendros que merodean en el bosque, criaturas de las que aprende leyendo los libros y diarios de su difunta abuela. Todo esto cambiará cuando su alma quede enlazada a la de Maekallus con solo un beso, un ser misterioso que podría no ser del todo honesto con ella.
The Will and the Wilds se vende como un romance, pero esto más bien me pareció un recuento débil de La Bella y la Bestia, con un preocupante Síndrome de Estocolmo, porque no sentí ninguna química entre Enna y Maekallus. Sin importar lo dulces de las escenas, los diálogos, incluso las descripciones soñadoras cada vez que estos dos estaban juntos, sentí que lo suyo era demasiado forzado.
Quitando el aspecto “romántico”, me pareció que Charlie N. Holmberg hizo un gran trabajo con esta novela. El mundo está muy bien construido, la mitología basada ligeramente en las leyendas celtas es muy atractiva, y esquiva muchos de los clichés de las novelas de fantasía como el fin del mundo, la profecía del elegido o la abuela bruja que entrena a su nieta que no sabía nada.
A decir verdad, este último fue reinventado, pero muy bien aplicado. Enna es una protagonista decidida, de carácter fuerte, pero no exagerada e intrépida. The Will and the Wilds presenta a una protagonista humana, deseosa de salir adelante y de mente práctica. Se me hizo extraño leer que esta chica se lamentara tan seguido por sus deseos académicos frustrados por su posición socioeconómica, fue lo único que me hizo ruido, pero queda bien al ver el panorama general. Charlie N. Holmberg escribió una historia interesante, atractiva e ingeniosa, aunque no la puedo considerar romántica a menos a que sea una relación tóxica.

Enna's a girl who lives on the outskirts of a city with her sick father, an older man who loses track of reality with each passing day, which has made his daughter responsible for the household chores, do the shopping, and protect their home from the monsters roaming the forest, creatures she learns about by reading her late grandmother's books and diaries. All of this will change when her soul becomes linked to Maekallus' with just a kiss, a mysterious being who may not be entirely honest with her.
The Will and the Wilds is being sold as a romance, but this rather seemed to me a weak retelling of Beauty and the Beast, with a troubling Stockholm Syndrome, because I didn't feel any chemistry between Enna and Maekallus. No matter how sweet the scenes, the dialogues, even the dreamy descriptions whenever these two were together, I felt that theirs was too forced.
Removing the “romantic” aspect, it seemed to me that Charlie N. Holmberg did a great job with this novel. The world is very well built, the mythology slightly based on Celtic legends is very attractive, and avoids many of the cliches of fantasy novels such as the end of the world, the prophecy of the chosen one or the witch grandmother who trains her granddaughter who didn't know anything.
To tell the truth, the latter was reinvented, but very well applied. Enna's a determined protagonist, with a strong character, but not exaggerated and intrepid. The Will and the Wilds presents a human protagonist, eager to get ahead and with a practical mind. It seemed strange to me to read that this girl lamented so often about her frustrated academic wishes because of her socioeconomic position, it was the only thing that didn't fit that much for me, but it's okay when you see the big picture. Charlie N. Holmberg wrote an interesting, engaging, and witty story, although I can't consider it romantic unless it's a toxic relationship.
