Buenos días, Nocturnos. Espero que estén todos muy bien. Hoy les quiero contar mi opinión sobre un libro que me encantó de principio a fin, con una muy fuerte dosis de fantasía y drama familiar. No es ningún secreto que odio la película de Maléfica y su secuela, porque quedé muy decepcionado, en ambas ocasiones. Sin embargo, Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy, por Serena Valentino, es justo lo que me hubiese gustado ver, además de que Maléfica es mi segunda bruja Disney favorita.

El cuento se ha relatado como si sucediera una vez en un sueño: la encantadora doncella se encuentra con su apuesto príncipe en el bosque. La historia ha sido contada muchas veces y de muchas maneras. Pero siempre la doncella descubre que ella es una princesa, una princesa que ha sido maldecida por un hada oscura para pincharse con una aguja y caer en un sueño eterno. Aunque sus tres buenas hadas intentan protegerla, la princesa sucumbe a la maldición. Pero el poder del bien perdura, ya que su verdadero amor derrota al dragón que escupe fuego y despierta a la princesa con el primer beso del verdadero amor. Los dos viven felices para siempre. Y sin embargo, esto es solo la mitad de la historia. ¿Y qué pasó con el hada oscura, Maléfica? ¿Por qué maldice a la princesa inocente? ¿Qué la llevó a estar tan llena de malicia, ira y odio? Muchas historias han tratado de explicar sus motivos. Aquí hay una, extraída de las muchas transmitidas a través de los siglos. Es una historia de amor y traición, de magia y ensueños. Querido cielo, ¡este es el tipo de historia que desearía que Disney nos hubiera contado en la película! Era todo lo que quería ver: una historia de fantasía oscura sobre traición, magia y abuso. Siempre supe que Maléfica tenía que ser una víctima debido a su aspecto, pero nunca pensé que las buenas hadas serían tan desagradables, ofensivas y odiosas.

Serena Valentino nos lleva a un viaje a través del tiempo para conocer la Tierra de las Hadas, cómo Maléfica creció y se convirtió en la villana que todos conocemos. Después de años de acoso y abuso, el hada oscura no pudo soportarlo más, ¿y quién no? Primavera es insoportable, sin mencionar a esa horrible Hada Madrina (sí, la de Cenicienta), y solo las dos son suficientes para convertir a cualquiera en un dragón que escupe fuego buscando venganza.

Esta novela comienza justo después de los eventos del libro anterior, pero nos da una imagen completa de todo lo que está sucediendo, tanto en el presente como en el pasado en varios capítulos. Blanca es ahora Reina, Circe está buscando respuestas, y el Hada Oscura está más furiosa que nunca luego de una traición imperdonable por parte de la que creyó que era su madre.. Aunque hay un par de ideas que reconocí de la película, ¡es una historia completamente nueva y mejor!

Mi único problema real fue el final. ¡Fue demasiado apresurado! Al igual que con el primer libro, quería leer toda la escena icónica, pero la mayor parte fue cortada. Realmente me gustó el desarrollo y los detalles en la historia de fondo, pero el clímax no fue lo que esperaba después de tanto drama, lucha y conflicto. Sin embargo, Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy es el mejor libro hasta ahora en la saga, una poderosa historia sobre el efecto del abuso y el prejuicio en un alma noble.

Good morning, Nocturnes. I hope they are all very well. Today I want to tell you my opinion about a book that I loved from start to finish, with a very strong dose of fantasy and family drama. It is no secret that I hate Maleficent's movie and its sequel, because I was so disappointed both times. However, Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy, by Serena Valentino, is just what I would have liked to see, plus Maleficent is my second favorite Disney witch.

The tale is told as if it's happening once upon a dream: the lovely maiden meets her handsome prince in the woods. The story has been told many times and in many ways. But always the maiden finds out that she is a princess-a princess who has been cursed by a dark fairy to prick her finger on a spindle and fall into an eternal sleep. Though her three good fairies try to protect her, the princess succumbs to the curse. But the power of good endures, as her true love defeats the fire-breathing dragon and awakens the princess with true love's first kiss. The two live happily ever after. And yet this is only half the story. So what of the dark fairy, Maleficent? Why does she curse the innocent princess? What led to her becoming so filled with malice, anger, and hatred? Many tales have tried to explain her motives. Here is one account, pulled down from the many passed down through the ages. It is a tale of love and betrayal, of magic and reveries. It is a tale of the Mistress of All Evil.

Dear heaven, this is the kind of story I wish Disney had given us in the movie! It was everything I wanted to see: a dark fantasy tale about betrayal, magic and abuse. I always knew Maleficent had to be a victim because of her looks, but I never thought the good fairies would be so nasty, abussive and hateful.

Serena Valentino takes us on a trip thorugh time to know the Fairylands, how Maleficent grew up and became the villain we all know. After years of bullying and abuse, the dark fairy couldn't take it anymore, and who wouldn't? Merryweather is unbeareable, not to mention that horrible Fairy Godmother (yes, Cinderella's,) and just the two of them are enough to turn anyone into a fire-breathing dragon seeking revenge.

This novel starts right after the events of the previous book, but gives us a whole picture of everything that's happening, both in the present and past by several chapters. Snow is now Queen, Circe is searching for answers, and the Dark Fairy is more furious than ever an unforgivable betrayal on the part of who she thought to be her mother. Although there are a couple of ideas I recognized from the film, it's a completely new and better story!

My only real problem was the ending. It was way too rushed! As with the first book, I wanted to read all of the iconic scene, but most of it was cut. I really liked the development and the details in the bckstory, but the climax was not what I expected after so much drama, fighting and conflict. However, Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy is the best book so far in the saga, a powerful tale of the effect of abuse and prejudice on a noble soul.
