Buenos días, Nocturnos. Espero que pasaran un muy buen fin de semana. Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una de las entrevistas de las que más me siento orgulloso, otro sueño que se volvió realidad: entrevistar al mismísimo Tilo Wolff, el fundador de Lacrimosa, una banda gótica que no necesita presentación. Descubrí su música cuando estaba en el bachillerato y fue amor a primera vista. La combinación de metal, música clásica, el cúmulo de emociones, las letras, y las voces de Tilo y Anne Nurmi me hechizaron en el acto. Por mucho tiempo creí que eran nombres fuera de mi alcance, pero hoy puedo decir que tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar a una leyenda gótica (con errores que aún recuerdo, pero de eso se aprende). Good morning, Nightlies. I hope you had a very good weekend. Today I want to share with you one of the interviews that I'm most proud of, another dream that came true: interviewing Tilo Wolff himself, the founder of Lacrimosa, a gothic band that needs no introduction. I discovered their music when I was in high school and it was love at first sight. The combination of metal, classical music, the accumulation of emotions, the lyrics, and the voices of Tilo and Anne Nurmi spellbound me on the spot. For a long time I thought they were names out of my reach, but today I can say that I had the opportunity to interview a gothic legend (with mistakes that I still remember, but from that you learn). Those of you who have been here a long time will even remember my review of Testimonium, an album I still love. I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did doing it!

1. 2016 fue un año cruel, muchas estrellas ya no están con nosotros, y muchas de ellas fueron una influencia para ti. ¿Cómo te sientes cuando piensas en esto?
TW: Por supuesto que me siento muy triste y esa es la razón de este nuevo álbum. A través de sus vidas y su trabajo dieron mucho al mundo e influyeron en nuestra forma de escuchar música, de escuchar, sentir y expresarnos. Lo que hicieron, especialmente músicos como David Bowie, Leonard Cohen y Prince, hicieron una gran diferencia en este mundo y esto finalmente me inspiró a escribir sobre mis sentimientos después de que se fueron.
2. ¿Qué te hizo decidir hacer un álbum en su memoria?
TW: En realidad no planeé componer tal un álbum. Me golpeó y de repente me encontré con mi guitarra y la línea "Wenn unsere Helden sterben" en mi cabeza escribiendo esta canción y así una vino luego de la otra ¡y antes de darme cuenta de lo que estaba pasando estaba en medio de la composición de este réquiem!
3. ¿Hubo alguno de ellos que consideres el que más te impactó como músico? Una vez dijiste que David Bowie es tu héroe, ¿quizás fue él?
TW: Bueno, a través de Prince llegué a conocer la intensidad de amar cierto tipo de música. Sus primeros álbumes fueron las cosas más preciadas en mi primera juventud y me di cuenta de que algo que no se ve ni se toca puede tener un impacto mayor que algo físico. Más tarde, David Bowie fue realmente mi héroe, musicalmente sabio y ¡cuan influyente fue en la escena gótica con álbumes como “Scary monsters” por ejemplo! Mis primeros discos reflejan de alguna manera un poco de este amor que siento por su música. Pero la mayor influencia en mi forma de escribir y hacer música ciertamente la tiene Leonard Cohen. Fue, en mi opinión, uno de los más grandes poetas que jamás haya existido y uno de los seres más sensibles de este circo musical. Creo que el mundo todavía no se dio cuenta de lo excepcional que era en realidad. ¡Algún día se hablará de él en una frase con Mozart, Beethoven y Bach!
4. ¿Cómo describirías la experiencia de honrar a aquellos que te inspiraron cuando estabas creando este álbum? ¿Hubo alguna pista que resultó ser la más desafiante?
TW: Dado que no escribí estas canciones de “Testimonium” con el propósito de honrar personalmente a estos músicos, no seguí ninguna regla o esquema. Transformé mi visión personal sobre ellos y sobre mi dolor por su muerte en una música muy personal. Este fue en realidad el mayor desafío, ¡acercarme tanto al dolor que a veces era difícil de soportar para seguir escribiendo!
5. ¿Qué esperas que sientan o piensen los fans de Lacrimosa sobre Testimonium?
TW: Nunca tengo expectativas porque Lacrimosa es tan única que todos necesitan encontrar una forma personal de entrar en un álbum. Cuando uno está haciendo canciones pop, puede esperar que la gente se sienta bien cuando las escucha, o uno está haciendo música de club y espera que la gente la baile. Simplemente abro mi corazón y dejo que todo fluya. Si a uno le gusta lo que escucha, estoy más que feliz, pero no puedo esperar esto.
6. Muchas gracias por su tiempo. Como última pregunta, y ahora que el álbum está a punto de ser lanzado, ¿cuáles son tus pensamientos finales al respecto?
TW: Bueno, lo siento, tomó demasiado tiempo hasta que finalmente respondí sus preguntas. ¡Lo siento por eso! Y hablando de los pensamientos finales, puedo decir que lo he estado escuchando ahora que ya se lanzó muchas veces y ya no quiero escuchar nada más en este momento. Sabes, siempre es genial cuando todo el trabajo está hecho y todo está terminado y finalmente puedo recostarme escuchándolo desde el lado de un fanático y ya no desde el lado del productor. ¡Así que este álbum triste me hace muy feliz!

1. 2016 was a cruel year, many stars are not with us anymore, and many of them were an influence for you. How do you feel when you think about this?
TW: Of course I feel very sad which is the reason for this new album. Through their lives and their work they gave so much to the world and influenced our way of listening to music, of hearing, feeling and expressing ourselves. What they did, specially musicians like David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Prince made such a difference to this world and this finally inspired me to write about my feelings after they are gone.
2. What make you decide to do an album in their memory?
TW: Actually I didn’t plan to compose such an album. It kind of hit me and I suddenly found myself with my guitar and the line “Wenn unsere Helden sterben” in my head writing this song and so one came to the other and before I realized what was going on I was in the middle of composing this requiem!
3. Was there any of them that you consider the one that made the biggest impact in you as a musician? You once said that David Bowie is your hero, maybe it was him?
TW: Well, through Prince I got to know the intensity of loving a certain kind of music. His early albums were the most precious things in my early youth and so I realized that something that is not to be seen and not to be touched can have a bigger impact than something physical. Later, David Bowie was really my hero, musically wise and how much influenced he had on the Gothic scene with albums like “Scary monsters” for example! My early albums somehow reflect a little of this love I feel for his music. But the biggest influence on my way of writing and making music certainly has Leonard Cohen. He was – in my opinion – one of the greatest poets that ever lived and one of the most sensitive beings in this music circus. I think the world still didn’t realize how exceptional he really was. One day people will speak of him in one sentence with Mozart, Beethoven and Bach!
4. How would you describe the experience of honoring those who inspired you when you were creating this album? Was there any track that proved to be the most challenging?
TW: Since I didn’t write these songs from “Testimonium” for the purpose of honouring these musicians personally I didn’t follow any rules or schemes. I transformed my personal view upon them and upon my pain about their death into very personal music. This actually was the biggest challenge, to get so close to the pain that is sometimes was hard to bare to continue writing!
5. What do you expect Lacrimosa’s fans to feel or think about Testimonium?
TW: I never have expectations because Lacrimosa is so unique that everyone needs to find a personal way to enter into an album. When one is making pop songs you can expect the people to feel good when they listen to it, or one is doing club music that he expects the people to dance to it. I just open my heart and let all flow. If one likes what he hears, I am more than happy, but I can’t expect this.
6. Thank you so much for your time. As a last question, and now that the album is about to be released, what are your final thoughts about it?
TW: Well, sorry, it took nearly too long till I finally answered your questions. Sorry about that! And talking about the final thoughts I can tell that I have been listening to it now that it is released many times already and I kind of don’t want to listen to anything else at the moment anymore. You know, it is always great when all the work is done and all is finished and I finally can lay back listening to it from the side of a fan and not anymore from the side of the producer. So this sad album makes me very happy!
