Buen día, Nocturnos. Espero que su semana vaya bien. ^^ Yo vengo con muy buen humor y ganas de hacerlos leer. Desde hace tiempo que no me enganchenganchaba tanto con un libro como me pasó con esta novela. Se trata de un retelling que dio mucho de que hablar cuando salió y que me causó iguales niveles de curiosidad: Malice, por Heather Walter.

Has escuchado esto antes, ¿no es así? El apuesto príncipe. El felices para siempre.

Absoluto sin sentido.

Déjame decirte, a nadie en Briar realmente le importa lo que les pase a sus princesas. No de la forma en que se preocupan por sus joyas y fiestas elaboradas y elixires que otorgan encanto. Pensé que no me importaba, tampoco.

Hasta que la conocí.

La Princesa Aurora. La última heredera al trono de Briar. Amable. Cortés. La futura reina que su reino necesita. Una a quien no le molesta que yo sea Alyce, la Gracia Oscura, aborrecida y temida por la misteriosa magia oscura que corre por mis venas. Humillada y avergonzada por los mismos nobles que me pagan para embotellar maleficios y luego me marcan como un monstruo. Aurora dice que debería estar orgullosa de mis dones. Que ella... se preocupa por mí. A pesar de que un poder como el mío fue responsable de su maldición.

Pero con menos de un año hasta que esa maldición la mate, cualquier futuro que pueda ver con Aurora se está desintegrando rápidamente, y ella no puede soportar besar a otro insípido príncipe. Quiero ayudarla. Si mi poder inició su maldición, tal vez sea lo que pueda deshacerla. Quizás juntas podamos forjar un nuevo mundo.

Tonterías de nuevo. Porque todos sabemos cómo termina esta historia, ¿no? Aurora es la bella princesa. Y yo-

Yo soy la villana.

Tengo que empezar esta reseña siendo honesto: casi toda la primera mitad del libro me hizo preguntarme cómo es que había tanto alboroto. Los personajes no terminaban de convencerme, sus reacciones, salvo en el caso de Alyce, y hubo cierto insta-amor al inicio que me hizo casi abandonar la lectura. Sin embargo, todo se explica mucho más adelante, cobra un sentido diferente, y terminé entendiendo qué estaba pasando debajo de lo que parecía ser un inicio débil.

Cerca de la mitad del libro, la cosa cambia. Las subtramas se vuelven más complejas, los personajes te revelan sorpresas, Alyce empieza a cambiar en algo más, Aurora cobra más importancia, y así sucesivamente. Todo lo que se estaba preparando baja la fachada de una historia sencilla con algo de romance se torna bastante oscuro, por no mencionar que esas últimas 100 páginas me destruyeron. ¡Literalmente estaba con el corazón a mil latidos por segundo!

Los elementos fantásticos están muy, muy bien pensados, la trama bien desarrollada, los personajes resultan ser más humanos que cualquier otra cosa. Sencillamente es una sorpresa detrás de otra que te deja sin aliento. ¿Única queja? Un arma de doble filo el haber usado nombres de la película de Disney. El juego de palabras de Alyce y Malice me encantó, ¿pero también nombrar a la princesa Aurora? ¿Una mascota voladora muy similar a Diablo? Las similitudes eran demasiado obvias, aunque la historia es totalmente diferente. Sé que son guiños a la película, pero hubiera preferido algo menos obvio.

Si les gustan las historias de fantasía bien construídas, un mundo bien pensado, intriga política, personajes engañozos, y subtramas que añadan encanto a la historia principal, junto con algo de romance, Malice les va a encantar. Ahora... Por algún motivo que no entiendo, este libro no está en español. ¿Qué demonios? Alguien arme un alboroto, porque Heather Walter merece más lectores, por no mencionar que la conclusión de la bilogía, Misrule, saldrá publicado el 10 de mayo.

It's a retelling that gave a lot to talk about when it came out and that caused me the same levels of curiosity: Malice, by Heather Walter.

Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss.

You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily ever after.

Utter nonsense.

Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either.

Until I met her.

Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she . . . cares for me. Even though a power like mine was responsible for her curse.

But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating—and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps together we could forge a new world.

Nonsense again. Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I—

I am the villain.

I have to start this review by being honest: pretty much the entire first half of the book had me wondering why there was such a fuss. The characters didn't quite convince me, their reactions, except in the case of Alyce, and there was a certain insta-love at the beginning that made me almost give up reading. However, everything is explained much later, takes on a different meaning, and I ended up understanding what was going on underneath what seemed like a weak start.

About halfway through the book, things change. The subplots become more complex, the characters reveal surprises to you, Alyce begins to change into something else, Aurora becomes more important, and so on. Everything that was brewing under the guise of a simple story with some romance turns pretty dark, not to mention those last 100 pages destroyed me. My heart was literally at a thousand beats per second!

The fantasy elements are very, very well thought out, the plot well developed, the characters turn out to be more human than anything else. It's just one surprise after another that takes your breath away. Only complaint? A double-edged sword having used names from the Disney movie. I loved the Alyce and Malice pun, but naming the princess Aurora too? A flying pet very similar to Diablo? The similarities were too obvious, even though the story is totally different. I know they are nods to the movie, but I would have preferred something less obvious.

If you like well-constructed fantasy stories, a well-thought-out world, political intrigue, deceitful characters, and subplots that add charm to the main story, along with some romance, you'll love Malice. Now... For some reason I don't understand, this book is not in Spanish. What the hell? Someone raise a ruckus, because Heather Walter deserves more readers, not to mention that the duology's conclusion, Misrule, is due out on May 10th.
