Manga: Snow Fairy

Hace algunos días estuve leyendo algunos mangas que me enviaron, y hubo uno que me llamó la atención, principalmente por el arte. Resultó ser una historia sencilla que atrapa por lo sana, feliz, e inocente que es: Snow Fairy, por Tomo Serizawa. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia a cambio de una reseña honesta!

Cuando el famoso fotógrafo de vida silvestre Narumi llega a Hokkaido para tomar fotos de las escurridizas "hadas de la nieve", termina varado en una tormenta de nieve. Después de ser rescatado, se instala en la casa del granjero local Haruki durante el invierno. Como polos opuestos, la sofisticada y extrovertida ciudadana Narumi y el chico de campo Haruki tienen mucho que aprender el uno del otro.

Después de que Haruki muestra interés, Narumi le enseña sobre fotografía... y antes de que se dé cuenta, se convierte en el único sujeto del nuevo pasatiempo de Haruki. Después de un invierno pasado tan juntos, ¿qué traerá el deshielo primaveral?

Aquí no hay dramas eterno ni grandes conflictos, sino que refleja la belleza de las vidas más simples, el encanto de lo cotidiano, y el entorno familiar. Aunque es cierto que podría no sonar atractivo a primera vista, la forma en que todo se desarrolla, los diálogos, la interacción con otros personajes, y los protagonistas hacen que el tiempo se pase volando.

El arte se combina muy bien con todo esto porque refleja los sentimientos de miedo, inseguridad, soledad, pero también de ilusión y esperanza. La historia se vuelve completa en muchos sentidos, apoyándose a veces en el guión, a veces en el arte, que nunca decepciona, debo decir. Es de esas historias que se leen sin esfuerzo alguno.

Lo que sí podría criticar es el inicio. Me pareció bruco, poco realista, la manera en que reaccionó Haruki ante Narumi. La cosas mejoraron con el tiempo, pero siento que la historia podría haber sido muy diferente de haber tenido un comienzo más realista, más sensato, porque me cuesta creer que alguien haría lo que él por Narumi.

Fuera de ese detalle, no puedo quejarme. Snow Fairy es una historia dulce, perfecta para hacerte soñar, y con la inocencia de un amor de bachillerato. Haruki y Narumi son personajes que al principio no parecen estar bien construidos, pero sorprenden más de una vez. Además, estoy feliz de que no sea una saga o una serie, porque funciona muy bien como tomo único.

A few days ago I was reading some mangas that was sent to me, and there was one that caught my attention, mainly because of the art. It turned out to be a simple story that captivates for how wholesome, happy, and innocent it is: Snow Fairy, by Tomo Serizawa. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

When famous wildlife photographer Narumi comes to Hokkaido to take photos of the elusive "snow fairies," he ends up stranded in a snow storm. After being rescued, he takes up residence in local farmer Haruki's house for the winter. As polar opposites, sophisticated and outgoing city slicker Narumi and country boy Haruki have a lot to learn from one another.

After Haruki shows an interest, Narumi teaches him about photography... and before he realizes it, he finds himself the sole subject of Haruki's new hobby. After a winter spent so close together, what will the spring thaw bring?

Here there are no eternal dramas or great conflicts, but it reflects the beauty of the simplest lives, the charm of the everyday, and the family environment. Although it's true that it might not sound attractive at first glance, the way everything unfolds, the dialogues, the interaction with other characters, and the protagonists make time fly by.

Art combines very well with all this because it reflects feelings of fear, insecurity, loneliness, but also illusion and hope. The story becomes complete in many ways, leaning sometimes on the script, sometimes on the art, which never disappoints I must say. It is one of those stories that is read without any effort.

What I could criticize is the start. I found it harsh, unrealistic, the way Haruki reacted to Narumi. Things got better with time, but I feel like the story could have been very different if it had a more realistic, sensible beginning, because I find it hard to believe that someone would do what he did for Narumi.

Other than that detail, I can't complain. Snow Fairy is a sweet story, perfect to make you dream, and with the innocence of a high school love. Haruki and Narumi are characters that at first don't seem to be well built, but surprise more than once. Also, I'm glad it's not a saga or a series, because it works very well as a standalone.
