Buen día, gente. Seguimos sin internet por estos lados (#QueDiver). Sin nada más que hacer, estoy concentrado en leer, escribir, editar, y repetir. ^^’ Hoy quiero compartirles mi opinión sobre una novela que me sorprendió muchísimo, inspirada en mi clásico gótico favorito de todos los tiempos: Pictures of Dorianna, por Catherine Stine. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme un ejemplar para reseñar por NetGalley!

Seguidores de internet, belleza, poder. Todo sonaba bien. Hasta que se transformó en una realidad aterradora, no pudo parar. Cuando su padre está encarcelado, su madre envía a Dorianna sola y llana a la casa de su tía en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Allí, Dorianna anhela construir una nueva identidad, pero la popular Lacey la intimida, sobre todo por llamar la atención de su ex, Ander. Ander lleva a Dorianna a Coney Island, donde Wilson, un camarógrafo, crea una impresionante recopilación de ella. Sueña con ser una sensación en línea, ya que nunca ha tenido una fiesta de cumpleaños y promete que daría cualquier cosa para volverse viral. Wilson afirma que es el Príncipe de las Tinieblas y le ofrece la belleza y la fama, incluso el amor con el que ha soñado, advirtiéndole que una promesa tiene sus desventajas. Una versión juvenil y moderna del clásico de Oscar Wilde, esta novela mantiene el enfoque en la obsesión, la moral y las virtudes de la humanidad. Es una historia de fantasía muy bien construida y con un ritmo trepidante que no te deja soltar el libro hasta que terminas de leer.
Además de que los personajes son bastante reales y los guiños a la novela original son claros, Catherine Stine reinventó la historia lo suficiente como para hacerla suya. Se adueñó de la idea, agregó un toque contemporáneo para los lectores de esta época, dando como resultado una historia fresca y a la vez nostálgica.
Me puso los pelos de punta en algunas ocasiones, aunque tiene un poco más de fantasía que de horror o literatura gótica. Esperaba algo MUCHO más oscuro, y aunque Dorianna fue de cabezas a la obsesión, el egoísmo y descubrió su lado más perverso, dando pie a escenas dramáticas e incómodas para el resto del elenco, siento que pudo haber habido más terror. Parecía una novela muy realista con algunos elementos paranormales.

Internet followers, beauty, power. It all sounded good. Until it transformed into a terrifying reality she couldn’t stop.When her father is jailed, her mother ships lonely, plain Dorianna to her aunt’s in Brooklyn, NY. There, Dorianna yearns to build a new identity, but the popular Lacey bullies her—mostly for getting attention from her ex, Ander. Ander takes Dorianna to Coney Island where Wilson, a videographer, creates a stunning compilation of her. She dreams of being an online sensation, as she’s never even had a birthday party, and vows she’d give anything to go viral. Wilson claims he’s the Prince of Darkness and offers her the beauty and fame, even love she’s dreamed of—warning her that a pledge has its downsides. Dorianna has no idea of how dire those consequences might be. She’s thrust into the spotlight, and an incomprehensible nightmare. Not only is she prettier, she’s gaining harmful powers of manipulation. When her dark forces grow beyond anything she can control, she’s desperate but clueless as to how to stop them.
A youthful, modern take on the Oscar Wilde classic, this novel maintains a focus on obsession, morality, and the virtues of humanity. It is a very well-built fantasy story with a fast-paced rhythm that won't let you drop the book until you finish reading.
In addition to the characters being quite real and the nods to the original novel being clear, Catherine Stine reinvented the story enough to make it her own. She took over the idea, added a contemporary touch to the readers of this time, resulting in a fresh and at the same time nostalgic story.
It made my hair stand on end at times, although it has a bit more fantasy than horror or gothic literature. I was expecting something MUCH darker, and although Dorianna went head-to-head with obsession, selfishness, and discovered her most wicked side, giving rise to dramatic and awkward scenes for the rest of the cast, I feel there may have been more terror. It looked like a very realistic novel with some paranormal elements.
However, it is read in one sitting. I lost track of time as chapter after chapter passed, eager to know what would happen next. There were many surprises along the way and the teachings are very, very valuable. Pictures of Dorianna is perfect for the intended audience and will make readers want to read Wilde's original novel. Macabre and addictive, it's a novel that will leave you breathless.
