Doom Patrol T1E4 / S1E4: Cult Patrol

English below

True to my word, here we are to speak about Cult Patrol, the fourth episode of Doom Patrol.

This time, the protagonists meet Willoughby Kipling, a Templar knight and chaos magician, who tries to stop the Cult of the Unwritten Book to avoid the end of the World. When he searches for Niles “The Chief” Caulder and is told he’s disappeared, he has no more option than to work with his protégés. They all manage to save Elliot Patterson, the book that if read could summon the Decreator to destroy it all, but the results are not what they expected.

Being honest, I expected more of this episode, which felt a bit loose compared with the past one. The story deviates a lot, although it’s evident Caulder has hidden a lot of who he is from his “students,” although that doesn’t prevent me from asking as viewer what does it have to do with the overall plot.

Cult Patrol is still interesting, though, because I was genuinely surprised when the episode ended. Somehow, the decadence and absurdism of the series made it all more entertaining and easy to swallow, but the script is still too lacking for me, besides the potential character development for Cliff, Rita and Jane. Ted Sutherland did a good job as Elliot, although he lacked a bit of emotion and drama.

It would be a lie to say I’m not disappointed with this episode. I hope there’s a good surprise waiting in the next one, because Doom Patrol had a good start and made me have high expectations. This could be just a mistake, but we’ll have to wait a week to know for sure. In the meantime, let’s try to forget the seemingly-done-with-a-marker tattoos in the body of a teenager.

¡Un saludo y un abrazo!
Greetings and hugs!
