Narnia #6: La Silla de Plata / The Silver Chair

English below
¡Buenos días, gente! ¿Siguen leyendo?

Good morning, people! Are you still reading? Tell me I’m not the only one in this plan. If so, I know I already sound desperate, but first you must be with no internet almost internet every day and then will know what I’m talking about. I don’t wish anyone this evil, but let’s talk about something better, like the sixth book in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair, by C. S. Lewis.

  • Publication: 1953
  • Author: C. S. Lewis
  • Illustrator: Pauline Baynes
  • Book series: The Chronicles of Narnia #6
  • Pages: 90 pages
  • Genres: Children, Fantasy, Adventure.

In this book we meet again with the Penvensies’ cousin, Eustace Scrubb, who arrives to Narnia with his classmate, Jill Pole, to help an old friend and rescue a new one. What they don’t know is that this trip will take them far away from Narnia, into the wild northern lands were giants are said to live.

This is another novel that contrasts a lot with the rest, even though there are some fights between good and evil, but with not as much relevance. What makes The Silver Chair interesting is that we see imperfect characters, regardless of Eustace being back to Narnia. Both he and Jill are far from being model kids, which makes this a more realistic story despite it’s a fantasy one.

If I had to pick my favorite character from all the series, it would be this story’s villain. Many have criticized C. S. Lewis for being a misogynist, and I understand the reasons why because this book reminds a lot The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but it’s undeniable it’s very well-crafted, and the witch we find seems more dangerous, sadistic and colder than Jadis herself. The final fight gave me the chills because of how macabre it was.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair, by C. S. Lewis, is the darkest book in the series, but also the one that teacher more than any other the importance of hope, responsibility, and integrity. There are some religious messages since it couldn’t be otherwise, but they are just a few and very subtle.

¡Un saludo y un abrazo!
Greetings and hugs!
