Webcómic: Hazeshift 1 + 2

Buenos días, gente bonita. Hace tiempo que no leo un webcomic, y por casualidad me encontré con una historia tan tierna como dramática. Es el tipo de trama que me gusta, llena de sorpresas y personajes tan humanos que no puedes evitar sentir empatía por ellos. Se trata de los primeros dos capítulos de Hazeshift, por Lei Koi, que me leí en una sentada.

Debido en parte a la tercera guerra mundial que terminó hace mucho tiempo, el aire se ha convertido en un peligro para la salud. La mayor parte de la población expuesta al medio ambiente crudo ha sido cargada con defectos de nacimiento. Como resultado, se crearon ciudades "seguras" sancionadas para proteger a la población genéticamente normal de los denominados "Hazeshifts", columnas de smog químico que viajan con el viento y ahogan a todos los que no tienen refugio.

Slade, un chico de una de estas ciudades, conoce a un chico misterioso de los barrios bajos cercanos durante un enfrentamiento incitado por su hermano menor. Intrigado, Slade regresa a los barrios bajos para aprender más sobre el chico misterioso. Nace una amistad para toda la vida; pero el mundo tiene otros planes.

Tengo que empezar por el guión sencillo y directo, uno que te atrapa desde el inicio. Hazeshift avanza sin problemas y es fácil encariñarse con este mundo azotado por la necesidad. Yo diría que incluso es fácil de imaginarse que así es como terminarán las cosas, dándole un aire bastante oscuro a todo, no porque lo necesite, porque pronto nos damos cuenta de que nada es perfecto, sino que las cosas se ponen aún más... ¿interesantes? ¿Intensas? Puede que ambas.

El arte mejora muchísimo también desde el inicio. En poco tiempo, vemos un cambio radical en el estilo que cada vez se vuelve más atractivo, jugando con los colores y los contrastes, las sombras y las luces, generando un efecto intimidante en cada escena. Sin embargo, hay más de una que sobrepasa lo legalmente dulce, lo tierno, que llega a ser impresionante.

Yo diría que el único problema es ese insta-amor que se adivina desde las primeras páginas. Aunque no es tan obvio al inicio, luego se vuelve bastante evidente y, a mí en lo particular, me saca de la lectura en el acto. El salto temporal entre ambos capítulos no ayuda mucho, aunque te deja un sabor agridulce porque sabes que hubo alguna clase de desarrollo en el lazo entre Slade y este chico.

Lei Koi actualmente creó una página en Kickstarter para lanzar el primer volumen en físico de este proyecto, y tiene mercancía temática a la venta en Tapas. Les recomiendo mucho pasar y apoyarle en cualquier manera que puedan, bien sea comprando, votando, comentando, o compartiendo, además de que Tapas le paga a Lei Koi con cada lectura en esa plataforma. Es una historia preciosa en un mundo decadente que estoy seguro les va a encantar a quienes la lean.

Good morning, beautiful people. It's been a while since I read a webcomic, and by chance I came across a story as cute as it is dramatic. It's the kind of plot that I like, full of surprises and characters so human that you can't help but feel empathy for them. These are the first two chapters of Hazeshift, by Lei Koi, which I devoured in one sitting.

Due in part to the long since ended 3rd world war, the air has become a health hazard. Most of the population exposed to the raw environment has been burdened with birth defects. As a result, sanctioned "safe" cities were created to protect the genetically normal populace from the since dubbed "Hazeshifts", plumes of chemical smog that travel with the wind and choke out all those without shelter.

Slade, a boy from one of these cities, meets a mysterious boy from the nearby slums during a confrontation incited by his younger brother. Intrigued, Slade returns to the slums to learn more about the mysterious boy. A lifelong friendship is born; but the world has other plans.

I have to start with the simple and direct script, one that catches you from the beginning. Hazeshift runs smoothly and it's easy to become attached to this need-stricken world. I would say that it's even easy to imagine that this is how things will end, giving a rather dark air to everything, not because it needs it, because we soon realize that nothing is perfect, but things get even more... interesting? Intense? Maybe both.

The art also improves a lot from the beginning. In a short time, we see a radical change in the style that becomes more and more attractive, playing with colors and contrasts, shadows and lights, generating an intimidating effect in each scene. However, there's more than one that exceeds the legally sweet, the tender, that becomes impressive.

I would say that the only problem is that insta-love that is guessed from the first pages. Although it's not so obvious at first, it becomes quite evident later and, for me personally, it takes me out of the reading on the spot. The time jump between the two chapters doesn't help much, although it leaves you with a bittersweet taste because you know that there was some kind of development in the bond between Slade and this boy.

Lei Koi currently set up a Kickstarter page to launch the first physical volume of this project, and has themed merchandise for sale at Tapas. It's a beautiful story in a decadent world that I'm sure will love those who read it.
