Es fácil hablar de literatura, puede que también de literatura gótica, ¿pero sensacionalismo de horror y recuentos? Claro que sí. Este estudio abre nuevos caminos examinando los orígenes del folleto gótico, sus editores y autores, para establecer de manera concluyente el impacto que estos folletos tuvieron en el desarrollo del género gótico. Considerado el descendiente ilegítimo de la novela gótica, el humilde chapbook (libro de capítulos) inundó el mercado a fines del siglo XVIII, creando un mercado secundario separado y distinto para las historias de terror. El comercio fue impulsado por un puñado de personas que eran libreros y comerciantes, propietarios de bibliotecas circulantes, papeleros y pequeños editores; lo que produjeron fueron más de cuatrocientos chapbooks, bluebooks y shilling shockers que contenían cuentos góticos de revistas, redacciones de novelas populares, extracciones de cuentos insertados completos y cuentos originales de terror. Este libro responde a la urgente y apremiante necesidad de contextualizar el chapbook gótico para obtener una visión más concisa y completa de todo el género gótico.

El libro hace un repaso cronológico desde la aparición del chapbook, detallando cada aspecto de estos entonces revolucionarios productos. Lo curioso es que realmente no hay tantas diferencias entre los tres términos, solo algunos detalles físicos, de contenido, y contexto, y es tan sencillo de seguir que se vuelve una lectura ligera en más de una ocasión.

Lo más sorprendente es el nivel de detalle y narración cronológica, en donde se explican muchos sucesos que hicieron del chapbook un fenómeno de su tiempo que, aunque de corta fama, dejó una huella en la historia. Ya sabía que el sensacionalismo vendía, pero no me esperaba que estos libros fuesen un monstruo sensacionalista que tenía a más de uno en mundos paranormales y criaturas sobrenaturales.

Mi principal problema es que, por más detallado que fue, no hubo un análisis socio-cultural de este tiempo, o un comentario sobre qué tenían estos libros, más allá de la accesibilidad y lo sensacionales que eran, para hacerlos tan populares. Si bien es cierto que es un libro de historia, no analítico, hubiese preferido saber más sobre este aspecto.

En líneas generales, Gothic Chapbooks, Bluebooks and Shilling Shockers, 1797-1830, es una lectura fascinante que te deja con ganas de más. Diría que los primeros capítulos fueron mis favoritos, los siguientes un poco más pesados, pero todos con un nivel de investigación envidiable. Franz J. Potter hizo un trabajo impecable en más de un sentido, y la lista al final con todos los chapbooks es invaluable

It's easy to talk about literature, maybe Gothic literature too, but horror sensationalism and storytelling? Of course. This study breaks new ground surveying the origins of the Gothic chapbook, its publishers and authors, in order to establish conclusively the impact these pamphlets had on the development of the Gothic genre. Considered the illegitimate offspring of the Gothic novel, the lowly chapbook flooded the market in the late eighteenth century, creating a separate and distinct secondary market for tales of terror. The trade was driven by a handful of individuals who were booksellers and dealers, circulating library proprietors, stationers, and small publishers – what they produced were more than four hundred chapbooks, bluebooks and shilling shockers containing Gothic tales from magazines, redactions of popular novels, extractions of entire inset tales, and original tales of terror. This book responds to the urgent and pressing need to contextualise the Gothic chapbook in ascertaining a more concise and comprehensive view of the entire Gothic genre.

The book takes a chronological review since the appearance of the chapbook, detailing every aspect of these then revolutionary products. The funny thing is that there really aren't that many differences between the three terms, just some physical details, content, and context, and it's so easy to follow that it becomes light reading on more than one occasion.

The most surprising thing is the level of detail and chronological narration, where many events are explained that made the chapbook a phenomenon of its time that, although short-lived, left a mark on history. I already knew that sensationalism sold, but I didn't expect that these books would be a sensational monster that had more than one in paranormal worlds and supernatural creatures.

My main problem is that, as detailed as it was, there was no socio-cultural analysis of this time, or comment on what it was about these books, beyond accessibility and how sensational they were, to make them so popular. Although it is true that it's a history book, not an analytical one, I would have preferred to know more about this aspect.

Overall, Gothic Chapbooks, Bluebooks and Shilling Shockers, 1797-1830, is a fascinating read that leaves you wanting more. I would say that the first chapters were my favorites, the following ones a bit heavier, but all with an enviable level of investigation. Franz J. Potter did an impeccable job in more ways than one, and the list at the end with all the chapbooks is priceless.
