Johnny Depp: Los Hombres También Sufren / Men Suffer Too

You have to live at the bottom of the ocean not to know about the trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. I hadn't wanted to bring it up until now, when a decision had finally been made and, of course, it was in favor of Johnny. Many have spoken about it, but I want to add my grain of sand, my opinion on what this victory means and why it's so important for everyone, but mainly for men.

I'm not going to summarize the entire legal process because it is not my job, but it is public knowledge that Johnny sued his ex-wife for defamation after publishing an article implying that Johnny Depp had abused and mistreated her. In the blink of an eye, this had an impact on Johnny's career, losing contracts, contacts, projects, and more. One of the most notorious cases could be his departure from the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them saga: after participating in the first two films, he was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen to play Gellert Grindelwald.

The reaction of social media was immediate, his reputation sank with no signs of being able to recover, and many sympathized with Amber Heard. This was made worse when a jury in the UK found Johnny Depp guilty following Amber's accusations. However, justice was finally served after Johnny sued his ex-wife in the United States.

This brought to light several key moments, such as when a psychologist diagnosed Amber with Borderline Personality Disorder and Histrionic Disorder, Amber deflecting questions from Camille Vasquez about alleged donations she promised to make, claiming that Johnny pushed Kate Moss down the stairs, when the model herself assured that this never happened.

It was not only her, but also her lawyer Elaine Bredehoft, who lied on several occasions, such as when she claimed that Amber used makeup to cover her bruises, only for the company to say that this is impossible because the palette shown in court was released after the relationship between Heard and Johnny. We're talking about a team so incompetent that one of Amber's lawyers objected to his own question or when Bredehoft herself tried to imply that Johnny is a narcissist for eating candy.

One of the key moments, for me, was the moment when they showed a conversation between the two, where Amber challenges Johnny to tell the world what happened, as if making fun of the fact that he was going to say that he was a victim of abuse and violence. In the end, the world believed him, but why was Amber so sure he would be ignored? Because Johnny is a man.

Although there's always talk of male abuse of women, and the #MeToo movement, what about men who are victims of abuse? Several social experiments have been carried out showing the two sides of the coin, both sexual harassment and physical violence. The result? No one responds when man is a victim. However, as the second video says at the end, according to the Department of Justice, one man is the victim of physical violence every 37 seconds, two men every minute, that is, 120 men an hour, and around 3,000 men a day. When has this been discussed?

I've known for a long time that Johnny would win this trial, and although it's amazing that there are still people who support Amber, it means that there's a sector of the world that is not being taken seriously, ignored, mocked and seems to be a ghost in the news: abused men. I myself have known of cases where several men reported several times mistreatment by women and were not taken seriously, until they responded with violence like any normal person, and they ended up in jail. What's more, I searched the internet for "my husband yells at me" and "my wife yells at me". Guess who has the resources to stop and deal with relationship abuse?

It is a subject that must be talked about whenever possible, a problem that we ignore without realizing it. A few days ago I brought up the topic of Johnny with a woman and she told me "but he's a man" and I replied "so because he's a man he has to be the abuser?" It seems that society says that the man is strong, brave, unbreakable, and the woman is fragile, sensitive, diplomatic, so she needs protection, but if the man can't protect himself then he's a walking joke.

That Johnny Depp has won and given a voice to so many men dealing with abuse is a huge step in the right direction, but there's still a lot to be done. I've said it more than once and I will always maintain it: the numbers of mental illness and suicide among men are alarming, even more so knowing that many do not participate in studies about it for fear of being mocked about it. As a message on the internet that I saw a few days ago said, you cannot believe a woman just because she is a woman. Anyone can be a victim regardless of their gender.

Greetings and hugs!
