Con la llegada de octubre los amantes del terror entramos en nuestro punto más fuerte. Anoche me devoré otro manga que me dejó con ganas de más, una historia apocalíptica de zombis y salvadores juveniles que se ve tan interesante como prometedora: Undead Messiah, Volume 1, por Gin Zarbo. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia a cambio de una reseña honesta!

Una mujer embarazada es perseguida por una criatura sobrenatural. En Internet, aparecen videos de un héroe vendado. Tim Muley, de 15 años, hace un terrible descubrimiento en el jardín de su vecino. Tres eventos aparentemente no relacionados, ¡todos los cuales parecen apuntar a un apocalipsis zombie inminente! Pero esta vez la historia no es sobre el fin de la humanidad; se trata de un nuevo comienzo...
La historia en sí es bastante sencilla, va directo al grano, y avanza muy rápido, aunque aún hay espacio para un poco de desarrollo. Aunque nos encontramos con varios personajes en poco tiempo, cada uno tiene suficiente espacio para generar interés, Tim manteniendo siempre su lugar como protagonista que debe hacerle frente a su vida despedazándose frente a sus ojos. Gin Zarbo toma varios riesgos, sorpresas, ¡y crea un entorno de pesadilla que me encanta!
En cuanto al arte, me recordó bastante a Kamo: Pact with the Spirit World (Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3), el trabajo de la gemela de la mangaka, con una mezcla de manga y cómic americano, pero también con un toque personal que lo hace más interesante y fácil de disfrutar. Admito que no sé cómo describirlo, y a riesgo de sonar cliché solo diré que tienen que verlo para entenderlo.
Al ser una historia juvenil, las cosas se dan muy rápido y no hay suficiente desarrollo como quisiera, y Tim parece que procesa todas estas situaciones traumáticas sin problema, haciéndole frente a los riesgos, las consecuencias, sin pensarlo mucho. Por más normal que sea en el género, me hubiera gustado un poco más de realismo en sus reacciones y las del resto del elenco.
En general, se trata de una lectura ligera, muy entretenida, que te atrapa desde el inicio y tiene varias sorpresas preparadas. El arte es precioso, el guión es sólido, y la propuesta lo suficientemente interesante como para querer más. Si bien es cierto que el desarrollo podría haber sido mejor, es fácil enamorarse de la historia. ¡Me gusta tanto la dirección en la que va que tuve que evitar leerlo de maratón en una sola noche!

A pregnant woman is pursued by a supernatural creature. On the internet, videos of a bandaged hero surface. 15-year-old Tim Muley makes a terrible discovery in his neighbor's garden. Three seemingly unrelated events, all of which seem to point to an imminent zombie apocalypse! But this time the story's not about the end of mankind; it's about a new beginning...
The story itself is fairly straightforward, straight to the point, and moves along very quickly, although there's still room for a bit of development. Although we meet several characters in a short time, each one has enough space to generate interest, Tim always maintaining his place as the protagonist who must face his life falling apart in front of his eyes. Gin Zarbo takes various risks, surprises, and creates a nightmarish setting that I love!
As for the art, it reminded me a lot of Kamo: Pact with the Spirit World (Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3), the work of the mangaka's twin, with a mixture of manga and American comics, but also with a personal touch that makes it more interesting and easy to enjoy. I admit I don't know how to describe it, and at the risk of sounding cliché I'll just say you have to see it to understand it.
Being a young adult story, things happen very fast and there's not enough development as I'd like, and Tim seems to process all these traumatic situations without a problem, facing the risks, the consequences, without giving it much thought. As normal as it is in the genre, I would have liked a little more realism in his reactions and the rest of the cast's.
In general, it's a light, very entertaining read that grabs you from the beginning and has several surprises in store. The art is gorgeous, the script is solid, and the plot is interesting enough to make you want more. While it's true that the development could have been better, it's easy to fall in love with the story. I like the direction it's going to so much I had to stop myself from binge read it in a single night!
