Cómic: Basilisk #9

Anoche leí algo bastante, pero miren que bastante extraño, y es difícil de describir. Aunque he leído esta serie desde que inició, me sigue sorprendiendo por sus ideas tan extrañas y bizarras. ¡Y de alguna manera hace que funcionen! Se trata del noveno número de Basilisk, con un guión de Cullen Bunn y arte de Jonas Scharf. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia a cambio de una reseña honesta!

Vanessa y Los Cinco reflexionan sobre su extraña vida de niños, el culto y la verdad sobre la naturaleza de la Quimera. Mientras tanto, Regan recuerda el papel sombrío que desempeñó en la mayor tragedia de Hannah mientras la vigilaba, pero no pasa mucho tiempo antes de que Barret le traiga noticias aterradoras sobre la Quimera...

Luego de un poco de espera, este número nos presenta mejor el pasado de los personajes, una primera mirada a lo que los llevó a ser lo que son hoy en día, y una probada de lo que se avecina. Spoiler: Es buenísimo. Es un guión sencillo que se burla del lector mostrando lo suficiente como para poner la imaginación a volar.

El arte refleja la tensa calma antes del desastre que indica la historia. Hay un detalle bastante creativo en los paneles que me encantó, y los colores le añaden una sensación de vida, aunque también de miseria emocional, a varias escenas. Es difícil no sumergirse en la lectura con esta combinación, volviendo a la realidad muy de golpe cuando todo termina.

Diría que el problema es lo breve de todo el número. Si bien el ritmo rápido de la lectura funciona con excelencia aquí, sentí que podría haber habido un poco más información, desarrollo de los personajes, especialmente con respecto a la Quimera, que se convirtió en un tema más confuso que cualquier otra cosa. No me desagradó, pero sí me dejó inconforme.

En líneas generales, Basilisk #9 funciona bastante bien. Deja algunos hilos sueltos que podrían haber sido respondidos allí mismo, y algunas sorpresas no dieron el impacto necesario, pero te mantiene atento, absorto en sus páginas, de principio a fin. Es de esos números que te hacen querer leer más al respecto.

Last night, I read something quite a bit weird, but like really weird, let me tell you, and it's hard to describe. Although I've read this series since it started, I'm still surprised by its strange and bizarre ideas. And somehow makes them work! This is about the 9th issue of Basilisk, with a script by Cullen Bunn and art by Jonas Scharf. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

Vanessa and the Five reflect on their strange life as children, the cult, and the truth about the Chimera's nature. Meanwhile Regan remembers the grim role she played in Hannah's greatest tragedy while checking on her, but it's not long before Barret brings her terrifying news of the Chimera...

After a bit of a wait, this issue gives us a better look at the characters' pasts, a first look at what made them who they are today, and a taste of what's to come. Spoiler alert: it's terrific. It's a straightforward script that teases the reader by showing just enough to set the imagination running wild.

The art reflects the tense calm before the disaster that the story indicates. There's some pretty creative detail in the panels that I loved, and the colors add a sense of life, yet also emotional misery, to several scenes. It's hard not to get immersed in reading with this combination, snapping back to reality when it's all over.

I would say that the problem is the shortness of the whole issue. While the reading's fast pace works excellently here, I felt like there could have been a bit more insight, character development, especially with regards to the Chimera, which became more of a confusing topic than anything else. I didn't dislike it, but it did leave me unsatisfied.

In general, Basilisk #9 works quite well. It leaves a few loose threads that could have been answered right there, and a few surprises didn't pack the punch, but it keeps you on your toes, engrossed in its pages, from start to finish. It's one of those issues that make you want to read more about it.
