Sandman 5: Juego a ser tú / A Game You

English below

  • Arte: Shawn McManus, Colleen Doran, Bryan Talbot, George Pratt, Dick Giordano, Stan Woch, Danny Vozzo y Todd Klein.
  • Saga: The Sandman Vol. 5 (#32 - 37)

Good day, Nighters! I hope you all are okay. Today I want to tell you about a volume that I had a hard time reading. Although Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You, by Neil Gaiman, is one of the most loved by the public and critics, and touches on topics that I love, it was particularly difficult for me to follow him, I even felt that it became heavy .

Volume Five of New York Times best selling author Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed creation The Sandman collects one of the series’ most beloved storylines. Take an apartment house, add in a drag queen, a lesbian couple, some talking animals, a talking severed head, a confused heroine and the deadly Cuckoo. Stir vigorously with a hurricane and Morpheus himself and you get this fifth installment of the Sandman series. This story stars Barbie, who first makes an appearance in The Doll's House and now finds herself a princess in a vivid dreamworld.

I will start by saying that I loved the issue of reality and identity, how these are so related and it is, ultimately, our perception that defines each one. The character of Wanda is undoubtedly one of my favorites, and that Gaiman included witches and the problem of gender and sex in witchcraft circles, along with the closure he gave, was excellent.

The same thing happens when Barbie says that the fantasy world she is transported to cannot be real because it is the world of her dreams, and in response they tell her that she goes to that world to dream, but that it is much older. What guarantee do we have that our reality is real? We may well be someone else's dreams, something I don't think we want to think about often.

However, the story itself was heavy, unattractive in some parts, and I had a hard time following it because beyond the dialogues I couldn't find a hook. I felt saturated most of the time by the cast that believed so fast and the number of situations that were taking place, all at the same time. Obviously it is the work of a teacher, who knows how to handle several events at the same time, but it exhausted me.

Anyway, Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You is a story that has not lost its relevance, much less if we consider the protests that are taking place around the world. There is a cry for collective justice and equality that is impossible to ignore, and the same thing happens here: the characters fight tirelessly until justice is done, both for them in particular and for causes that surpass them. these
