Buen día, Nocturnos. Espero que todos estén bien. ^^ Hoy vengo a hablarles de The Phantom's Curse, de Shelley Wilson, una una novela de alta fantasía que pensé que iba a disfrutar bastante, pero fue más bien una lectura accidentada y agridulce. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme un ejemplar a cambio de una reseña honesta!

Para salvar a su hermano, recurre al intrépido forajido Robbie y sus amigos en busca de ayuda. Junto con la ayuda de Theo, el hijo del hombre santo, un rescate audaz pronto descubre los rumores de un viejo hechicero que aún puede vivir y susurra la maldición del fantasma, un mal que requiere un anfitrión y busca destruir el mundo, amenazando con resurgir. Con la amenaza de un antiguo mal en Obanac y los ataques de los Jinetes Negros en todo el reino, ningún lugar parece seguro. Para salvar a la gente de la tierra y a todos los que le importan, Marianne debe descubrir el secreto de quién es realmente y abrazar la magia de los magos que se agita en su interior.

Tengo que empezar diciendo... ¿magia de magos? No tiene mucho sentido. La autora intentó crear algo evocador, pero le salió el tiro por la culata. Al menos si nos hubiese explicado otros tipos de magia, puede ser que la idea quedara mejor, pero de resto... En fin.

La trama y el mundo son muy inspirados en la Europa medieval, una apuesta segura que es de mis placeres culposos. Me encantan las historias ubicadas en bosques interminables, igual los personajes que usan arcos, jeje. Es una historia segura, sin mucha novedad, pero con una primera mitad muy entretenida.

¿Por qué hago énfasis en la primera mitad? Porque la calidad de la segunda va en descenso a medida que avanzas en la lectura. Empiezan a pasar tantas cosas, una detrás de la otra y sin dar oportunidad de sentir algo al respecto, que te sacan del libro. La conspiración, la formación de un grupo rebelde, incluso el triángulo amoroso entre un chico adorable y otro detestable, todo pasa solo por pasar, sin agregarle textura a la historia, o sin tener mucho sentido.

Quiero creer que con un mejor desarrollo y un mundo mejor construido, The Phantom's Curse habría sido una buena historia, por de verdad que disfruté esa primera mitad y ver el mundo desde los ojos de Marianne. Wilson mantuvo un buen estilo en esos capítulos, sencillo pero atractivo, y me pareció muy creativo el primer uso que le dio la protagonista a su magia, pero parece que tenía prisas por terminar con la novela, y empezó a agregar de todo.

Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

I have to start by saying... mage magic? Doesn't have much sense. The author tried to create something evocative, but it was shot in the butt. At least if she had explained other types of magic, it may be that the idea was better, but the rest... Anyway.

The plot and the world are very medieval-Europe inspired, a sure bet that's one of my guilty pleasures. I love the stories located in endless forests, just like the characters who use bows, hehe. It's a safe story, without much news, but with a very entertaining first half.

Why do I emphasize the first half? Because the quality of the second one decreases as you progress in reading. So many things begin to happen, one after the other and without giving an opportunity to feel something about it, that tey take you out of the book. The conspiracy, the formation of a rebel group, even the love triangle between an adorable boy and another detestable one, everything happens just for the sake of it, without adding texture to the story, or making much sense.

I want to believe that with better development and a better built world, The Phantom's Curse would have been a good story, as I really enjoyed that first half and seeing the world from Marianne's eyes. Wilson kept a good style in those chapters, simple but attractive, and I found the first use that the protagonist gave to her magic very creative, but it seems she was in a hurry to finish the novel, and began to add everything.
