Book review: The Raven

¡Buen día, Nocturnos! Espero que estén todos bien. Recién terminé una lectura llena de sorpresas, buenas ideas y con una trama muy interesante, una novela post-apocalíptica muy atractiva en donde las bestias mitológicas y del folklore mundial son reales. Temiendo que la humanidad se dirija hacia la extinción nuclear, un grupo de genetistas desata un complot para salvar el mundo. Han descubierto que las criaturas mitológicas como hombres lobo, vampiros, brujas y sátiros alguna vez fueron reales, y que estas monstruosas hebras genéticas todavía están presentes en el ADN humano. Estos científicos radicales desatan el lado bestial de los seres humanos que había estado dormido durante eones y, en cuestión de meses, la mayoría de la gente está muerta y las criaturas sedientas de sangre gobiernan la tierra. A pesar de que Dez McClane no tiene poderes especiales, está decidido a expiar las vidas que no pudo salvar y a salvar a la mujer que ama. Pero, ¿cuánto tiempo puede sobrevivir un hombre en un mundo lleno de monstruos?

Devoré la primera mitad del libro de una sola vez. Me fascinó que Dez parecía ser un personaje tan humano, un hombre muy real con virtudes y defectos, torturado por su pasado y su debilidad, porque no es un héroe, no es un adulto fuerte capaz de hacer todo. No es Rambo, en resumen, sino un hombre común muerto de miedo y marcado por el trauma después de que todo el mundo se derrumbó.

La sociedad que encontramos está lejos de ser utópica, perfecta o incluso civilizada. Todo lo contrario. Esta es una nueva Tierra donde la Ley de Darwin, la supervivencia del más apto, es la única ley real cuando casi toda la humanidad ha sido borrada del planeta. El libro contiene descripciones gráficas de violencia y asesinato, más de lo que pensaba inicialmente, así que tengan esto en cuenta. Aunque me encantó por lo realista que parecía todo.

La segunda mitad fue un poco más lenta, si me preguntan. Pasaron tantas cosas al mismo tiempo que me sentí abrumado más de una vez. Era difícil hacer un seguimiento de todo, y Dez no se desarrolló tanto hasta casi el final del libro. Estaba esperando algo mejor de él ya que se estaba convirtiendo en un gran personaje, pero aun así logré disfrutar de toda la historia.

Si quieren vivir en un mundo más oscuro y salvaje donde vampiros, caníbales, brujas, hombres lobo e incluso bestias mitológicas viven dentro de los seres humanos, disfrutarán de The Raven. Jonathan Janz tiene un buen estilo, buenas ideas y buenos personajes, ¡y estoy ansioso por ver lo que pueda crear en el futuro!

I just finished a reading full of surprises, good ideas and with a very interesting plot, a very attractive post-apocalyptic novel where mythological and world-folklore beasts are real. Fearing that mankind is heading toward nuclear extinction, a group of geneticists unleash a plot to save the world. They’ve discovered that mythological creatures such as werewolves, vampires, witches, and satyrs were once real, and that these monstrous genetic strands are still present in human DNA. These radical scientists unleash the bestial side of human beings that had been dormant for eons, and within months, most people are dead, and bloodthirsty creatures rule the earth. Despite the fact that Dez McClane has no special powers, he is determined to atone for the lives he couldn’t save and to save the woman he loves. But how long can a man survive in a world full of monsters?

I devoured the first half of the book in a single sitting. It fascinated me that Dez seemed to be such a human character, a very real man with virtues and flaws, tortured by his past and his weakness, because he's not a hero, not a strong adult capable of doing everything. He's not Rambo, in short, but a common man scared to death and scarred with trauma after the whole world went down.

The society that we encounter is far from utopic, perfect or even civilized. Quite the opposite. This is a new Earth where Darwin's Law, the survival of the fittest, is the only real law when almost all of humankind has been erased of the planet. The book contains graphic descriptions of violence and murder, more than I nitially thought, so be mindful about this. Although I loved it for how realistic it all seemed to be.

The second half of it was a bit slower, if you ask me. There was so much happening at the same time I felt overwhelmed more than once. It was hard to keep track of it all, and Dez didn't develop that much until near the end of the book. I was expecting better of him since he was becoming a great character, but I still managed to enjoy all of the story.

If you want to dwell in a darker, wilder world where vampires, cannibals, witches, werewolves, and even mythological beasts live inside human beings, you're gonna enjoy The Raven. Jonathan Janz has a good style, good ideas and made good characters, and I'm eager to see what he could create in the future!
