Buen día, Noctunos. Espero que pasaran un buen fin de semana. Necesitaba unos días lejos de internet, siendo honesto, y aunque tengo cosas pendientes de nuevo sí que valió la pena. ^^ Hoy vengo con la reseña de un libro que me gustó bastante y que me puso la piel de gallina muchas veces. Se trata de Misfits, de Hunter Shea. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar a través de NetGalley!

Durante el apogeo de la era del grunge de los 90, cinco amigos de la escuela secundaria que viven al margen son llevados al límite. Cuando una de sus amigas es violada brutalmente por un pueblerino borracho, deciden tomar el asunto en sus propias manos. En lo profundo de los bosques de Milbury, Connecticut, vive la leyenda de los Cabezas de Melon, una raza de criaturas que evitan la interacción humana y se aprovechan de aquellos que se atreven a vagar por Dracula Drive. Quizás esta noche, una banda de inadaptados pueda ayudar a la otra. O tal vez algunas leyendas deben ser temidas por una razón.

La historia avanza bastante rápido. Tuve algunas dudas al inicio por tantos personajes al mismo tiempo, pero todos se combinaron muy bien y en poco tiempo, ofreciendo distintos puntos de vista para un panorama mucho más completo. Cada uno es tan único y diferente a los demás que se hace indispensable, y es doloroso por todo lo que sucede en los próximos capítulos.

Hunter Shea disfrutó mucho al escribir esta novela. Lo noté cuando me sumergí en la trama, me preocupé por los personajes, y sentí su dolor y sus alegrías. La lectura te envuelve de una manera impresionante por los detalles y la manera en que todo está construido. Lo más tétrico es que... todo esto podría pasar, que la leyenda existe y los miedos son reales.

Algunas escenas se me hicieron más largas de lo que debería, pero fueron más las que me dieron escalofríos. Hay momentos en que insulté a todos y cada uno de los personajes. Principales, secundarios... Todos se ganaron el odio en algún momento porque están lejos de ser perfectos. Son humanos que cometen errores que les cuestan caro, uno atrás de otro, y les corresponde a ellos rectificar sin ayuda de nadie.

Misfits te pone a pensar sobre lo que define a los humanos. Te muestra lo que somos capaces de hacer para sobrevivir, y a que a veces el miedo a lo desconocido y el deseo de destruir no son más que simple ignorancia alimentada por venganza. El final me dejó sin palabras, me dolió en lo más hondo, y me encantó al mismo tiempo. Muy, muy bueno.

I needed a few days away from the internet, to be honest, and although I have things pending again, it was worth it. ^^ Today I come with a review of a book that I liked a lot and that gave me goose bumps many times. It's about Misfits, by Hunter Shea. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy through NetGalley!

During the height of the 90s grunge era, five high school friends living on the fringe are driven to the breaking point. When one of their friends is brutally raped by a drunk townie, they decide to take matters into their own hands. Deep in the woods of Milbury, Connecticut, there lives the legend of the Melon Heads, a race of creatures that shun human interaction and prey on those who dare to wander down Dracula Drive. Maybe this night, one band of misfits can help the other. Or maybe some legends are meant to be feared for a reason.

The story progresses pretty fast. I had some doubts at first because of so many characters at the same time, but they all combined very well and in a short time, offering different points of view for a much more complete picture. Each one is so unique and different from the others that it becomes indispensable, and it is painful for everything that happens in the next chapters.

Hunter Shea really enjoyed writing this novel. I noticed it when I immersed myself in the plot, cared about the characters, and felt their pain and their joys. The reading envelops you in an impressive way by the details and the way everything is built. The most gloomy thing is that... all this could happen, that the legend exists and the fears are real.

Some scenes seemed longer than it should have, but they were was more the ones that gave me the creeps. There were times when I insulted each and every character. Main, secondary... They all earned their hatred at some point because they are far from perfect. They are humans who make mistakes that cost them dearly, one after the other, and it is up to them to rectify without help from anyone.

Misfits gets you thinking about what defines humans. It shows you what we are capable of doing to survive, and that sometimes the fear of the unknown and the desire to destroy are nothing more than simple ignorance fueled by revenge. The ending left me speechless, hurt me deep down, and I loved it at the same time. Very very good.
