Buenos días, gente bonita. ¿Qué tal estuvo ese fin de semana? Yo terminé un libro que tenía pendiente desde hace mucho tiempo pero al que también le tenía muchas ganas. Fue un poco agridulce, pero no puedo decir que me decepcionó del todo. Nuestro amor perdurable por los vampiros, los chicos (y chicas) malos de la fantasía paranormal, ha persistido durante siglos. A pesar de ser asesinos sanguinarios y despiadados, las historias de vampiros suelen tener matices eróticos que faltan en otras historias paranormales o de terror.

Incluso cuando los dientes monstruosos se hunden en gargantas pálidas e indefensas, especialmente entonces, los vampiros son sexys. ¿Pero por qué? En A History of the Vampire in Popular Culture, la autora Violet Fenn lleva al lector a través de la historia de los vampiros en "realidad" y ficción, sus orígenes en la mitología y la literatura y su atractivo perdurable en la televisión y el cine. Profundizaremos en la sexualidad, y el sexismo, de la tradición de los vampiros, así como en cómo el público moderno todavía tiene hambre de un par de colmillos afilados en medio de la noche.

Luego de leer el primer libro de la autora, este me pareció de lectura obligatoria principalmente por el tema. El inicio es bastante sólido y nos explica los orígenes de la figura del vampiro, testimonios reales y casos extraordinarios que parecen sacados de las novelas góticas de antaño, pero que fueron parte de las noticias en algún momento.

Los detalles y los análisis son imperdibles. Uno no deja de preguntarse qué podría estar pasando por las mentes de quienes vivieron en esa época, cómo surgieron los primeros vampiros mediáticos, pero A History of the Vampire in Popular Culture hace un trabajo excelente al inicio, mostrando ambas caras de la moneda: lo atractivo y repugnante de estos seres, cómo pueden ser el epítome de la perfección y a la vez alejarse de ella. Sin embargo, cerca de la mitad del libro el encanto se va perdiendo.

Mi principal problema fue que la autora iba de un tema a otro sin muchas conexión. En un momento podía estar hablando de cine y al siguiente mencionaba los cómics, repitiendo ideas que ya había explorado anteriormente y volviendo a los mismos ejemplos. Uno que me molestó particularmente fue todo el espacio que dedicó a desprestigiar a Crepúsculo pero luego celebró a The Radleys, donde los vampiros también aparentan ser humanos. Siento que perdió mucho el rumbo especialmente en ese último capítulo sobre la subcultura gótica que, aunque conectada con los vampiros, es un tema aparte.

Aunque no llenó del todo mis expectativas, A History of the Vampire in Popular Culture es una lectura que te hace ver las cosas desde otro punto de vista, que te pone a pensar y responde varias dudas que a lo mejor algunos no se había planteado antes. Sin embargo, hay que tomar algunas opiniones con un grano de sal, que si bien es cierto que Violet Fenn lo advierte al inicio que tiene opiniones marcadas y sus vampiros son diferentes a los de nuestra nueva generación, el cambio brusco igual deja descolocado al lector.

It was a bit bittersweet, but I can't say I was totally disappointed. This is A History of the Vampire in Popular Culture: Love at First Bite, por Violet Fenn. Our enduring love of vampires - the bad boys (and girls) of paranormal fantasy - has persisted for centuries. Despite being bloodthirsty, heartless killers, vampire stories commonly carry erotic overtones that are missing from other paranormal or horror stories.

Even when monstrous teeth are sinking into pale, helpless throats - especially then - vampires are sexy. But why? In A History of the Vampire in Popular Culture, author Violet Fenn takes the reader through the history of vampires in ‘fact’ and fiction, their origins in mythology and literature and their enduring appeal on TV and film. We’ll delve into the sexuality - and sexism - of vampire lore, as well as how modern audiences still hunger for a pair of sharp fangs in the middle of the night.

After reading the author's first book, I found this one to be required reading mainly because of its subject matter. The beginning is quite solid and explains the origins of the figure of the vampire, real testimonies and extraordinary cases that seem to be taken from the gothic novels of yesteryear, but that were part of the news at some point.

The details and analysis are unmissable. One keeps wondering what could be going through the minds of those who lived at that time, how the first media vampires came to be, but A History of the Vampire in Popular Culture does an excellent job of opening it up, showing both sides of the coin: the attractive and disgusting of these beings, how they can be the epitome of perfection and at the same time move away from it. About halfway through the book, however, the charm wears off.

My main problem was that the author went from one topic to another without much connection. One moment she could be talking about movies and the next she was mentioning comics, repeating ideas that she had previously explored and returning to the same examples. One that particularly bothered me was all the space she devoted to disparaging Twilight but then celebrating The Radleys, where the vampires also pretend to be human. I feel like she lost her way a lot especially in that last chapter about the goth subculture which, although connected to vampires, is a separate topic.

Although it did not fully meet my expectations, A History of the Vampire in Popular Culture is a reading that makes you see things from another point of view, that makes you think and answers several questions that perhaps some had not raised before. However, you have to take some opinions with a grain of salt, that although it is true that Violet Fenn warns you at the beginning that she has strong opinions and her vampires are different from those of our new generation, the sudden change still leaves the reader misplaced.
