Comic: Specs #1

¿Les gustaría que sus deseos se volvieran realidad? Piensen de nuevo. Esa es la idea que siempre desencadena incontables horrores en cualquier historia, y el primer número del que les hablo hoy deja ver que esta no será la excepción: Specs #1, por David M Booher y Chris Shehan. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme un ejemplar a cambio de una reseña honesta!

Todo lo que Kenny y Ted quieren es no sentirse marginados en su pequeño pueblo de Ohio. Sin embargo, su mundo se pone patas arriba cuando los Magic Specs que recibieron abren un mundo de posibilidades. Sus deseos comienzan siendo bastante inocentes, pero cuando desean que su acosador desaparezca... las cosas toman un giro maldito, con consecuencias mucho más oscuras de lo que creían posible...

Aunque el guión es sencillo, parece verse desde ya que la idea va a tener un desarrollo interesante, no tanto por el propio contenido, sino por la portada misma. La lectura como tal no da mucha información, pero no por eso quiero decir que no se disfruta. Todo lo contrario. Uno esperaría que, al ser un número introductorio y atmosférico donde solo conocemos los personajes, fuese flojo, pero nada por el estilo.

El tiempo se pasa volando con un guión sólido, un arte precioso, y personajes con los que te identificas de inmediato. Los temas sociales, sin embargo, no se adivinan, sino que son explícitos desde el principio. Se ve que el clasismo, racismo, homofobia, y puede que más temas sociales aparecerán a lo largo de la historia, y no puedo esperar a que tomen fuerza.

Si me hubiera gustado más que fuese más extenso, sin embargo. Algunas páginas adicionales le hubiesen dado más espacio a los creadores para mostrar más de la relación de Kenny y Ted, más de lo que está pasando a su alrededor, crear más tensión... Más desarrollo, en general, porque el final, aunque atrapante, se siente un poco abrupto.

Yo diría que es una historia perfecta para quienes quieren terror con toques retro pero con un sentimiento actual. Specs #1 es corta pero certera, generando interés con facilidad en poco tiempo, y corona con un final lo suficientemente impactante como para dejarte con ganas de más. Podría ser más larga, sí, pero se sostiene bastante bien tal y como es.

All Kenny and Ted want is to not feel like outcasts in their small Ohio town. Their world is turned upside down though when the Magic Specs they received unlock a world of possibilities. Their wishes start out innocent enough, but when they wish that their bully would disappear... things take a cursed turn, with far darker consequences than they thought possible...

Although the script is simple, it seems that the idea's going to have an interesting development, not so much because of the content itself, but because of the cover. Reading alone doesn't give much information, but that doesn't mean that it's not enjoyed. Quite the contrary. One would expect that, being an introductory and atmospheric number where we only get to know the characters, it would be weak, but nothing like that.

Time flies by with a solid script, gorgeous art, and characters you immediately identify with. The social themes, however, are not guessed at, but made explicit from the start. It looks like classism, racism, homophobia, and maybe more social issues will appear throughout the story, and I can't wait for them to take hold.

I would have liked it to be more extensive, however. Some additional pages would have given the creators more space to show more of Kenny and Ted's relationship, more of what's going on around them, create more tension... More development, in general, because the ending, although captivating, it feels a bit abrupt.

I would say that it's a perfect story for those who want horror with retro touches but with a current feeling. Specs #1 is short but to the point, easily generating interest in a short amount of time, and caps off with a finale shocking enough to leave you wanting more. It could be longer, yes, but it holds up pretty well as it is.
