Reseña / Review: Cassadaga Nights

Espero que estén bien. ^^ Hoy vengo con una reseña de un libro que me mantuvo entretenido estos días. Cassadaga Nights, de Jana Denardo, es bastante corto y los personajes son bastante simpáticos. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar a través de NetGalley!

Santino Bellomi y su compañero de trabajo, Cam, son enviados a Cassadaga, Florida por Aspida Pneuma, un grupo de psíquicos y magos. Su trabajo consiste en rescatar a una nixie de un lago contaminado y comprobar la ciudad, conocida por sus psíquicos. Nuevos reclutas a Aspida siempre son bienvenidos, ¿y qué mejor lugar que un campamento espiritualista para cazarlos? Sin embargo, lo que más quiere Santino es terminar la tarea rápidamente. No es un fanático del calor y la humedad, y estaría deseando tener unas merecidas vacaciones una vez que la misión haya terminado.

Ryan Doyle creció en Cassadaga, donde ser psíquico corre en la familia. Ryan nunca ha vagado lejos de casa, aunque es difícil ser un nerd gay, aspirante a autor de fantasía urbana que vive en un pueblo pequeño. Su trabajo como psíquico del pueblo es bastante rutinario hasta que conoce a alguien nuevo. Ryan nunca se había encontrado con nadie con un escudo psíquico tan fuerte hasta que Santino se sienta para una lectura. Intrigado, invita a salir a Santino a pesar de que Santino es tan reservado como divertido.

Santino espera ganarse a Ryan tanto para él como para Aspida. Y espera que sus habilidades en la cocina muevan la balanza a su favor. Ryan casi ha renunciado a encontrar el amor, viviendo en la Florida rural. ¿Puede un turista seductor ser la respuesta a sus sueños?

Las cosas nunca marchan bien para los de Aspida. Lo que debería haber sido una simple misión de rescate está plagado de mosquitos, fantasmas enfurecidos y alguien o algo que drena a los residentes de su fuerza vital. La primera incursión de Ryan en la aventura puede ser la última.

Como dije, es un libro corto que se lee en poco tiempo. Me gustó el inicio, cómo los personajes se hacen querer, y otros no tanto, en poco tiempo. La puesta en escena es bastante rápida y nos enteramos en el acto de qué está pasando en este pueblo. El ritmo rápido trabaja muy bien este aspecto, por lo que me sumergí en la lectura prácticamente desde la primera pagina.

Hay muchos elementos paranormales y de fantasía, aunque son más bien referenciales. El foco es la relación entre Santino y Ryan, cómo se van conociendo y ese tira y afloja entre los dos extraños que, aunque sienten química e interés por el otro, no quieren dejar de lado sus secretos. La dinámica entre los dos es interesante de ver, y más de una vez se ven envueltos en situaciones chistosas que me hicieron sonreír.

Al llegar a la mitad del libro sí sentí que la autora divagaba un poco, que se perdía un poco la magia e incluso me confundía porque perdí interés a medida que avanzaba. El tema de la nixie parecía estancado, algo de fondo y no un tema central como me hizo creer la sinopsis, mucho menos el tema de los residentes que se desmayan constantemente. De repente parecían solo elementos de fondo, favoreciendo el romance entre los personajes, que no se desarrollaron tanto como esperaba.

No obstante, Jana Denardo tiene un buen estilo de escritura y Cassadaga Nights se recuperó de este detalle luego de un par de capítulos, volviendo a un balance en cuanto a los temas que me mantuvo interesado al final. En general, es una bonita historia para pasar el rato y reírse con las ocurrencias de dos personajes que, aunque idealizados, no son perfectos.

Santino Bellomi and his coworker, Cam, are sent to Cassadaga, Florida by the Aspida Pneuma, a group of psychics and mages. Their job is to rescue a nixie from a polluted lake and to check out the town, which is known for its psychics. New recruits to the Aspida are always welcome and where better than a spiritualist camp to hunt for them? What Santino wants most, however, is to finish the assignment quickly. He isn’t a fan of heat and humidity, and he’d looking forward to a well-earned vacation once the mission is over.

Ryan Doyle grew up in Cassadaga, where being psychic runs in the family. Ryan has never roamed far from home, though it’s hard being a geeky gay, wannabe urban fantasy author living in a small town. His job as one of the town psychics is fairly routine until he meets someone new. Ryan has never encountered anyone with a psychic shield so strong until Santino sits down for a reading. Intrigued, he asks Santino out even though Santino is as secretive as he is fun.

Santino hopes to win Ryan over both for himself and for the Aspida. And he’s hoping his skills in the kitchen will swing the balance in his favor. Ryan has almost given up on finding love, living in rural Florida. Can a seductive tourist be the answer to his dreams?

Things never run smoothly for those in the Aspida. What should have been a simple rescue mission is plagued by mosquitoes, enraged ghosts, and someone or something draining residents of their life force. Ryan’s first foray into adventure may be his last.

 

As I said, it's a short book that's read in a short time. I liked the beginning, how likeable the characters become, and others not so much, in a short time. The staging's quite fast and we find out immediately what's happening in this town. The fast pace works this aspect very well, so I immersed myself in reading practically from the first page.

There are many paranormal and fantasy elements, although they are rather referential. The focus is the relationship between Santino and Ryan, how they get to know each other and that tug of war between the two strangers who, although they feel chemistry and interest in each other, do not want to let go of their secrets. The dynamic between the two is interesting to watch, and more than once they get caught up in funny situations that made me smile.

When I got to the middle of the book, I did feel that the author was rambling a little, that the magic was lost a bit and even confusing me because I lost interest as I went on. The nixie theme seemed stagnant, something in the background and not a central topic as the synopsis led me to believe, much less that of the residents constantly fainting. Suddenly they seemed only background elements, favoring the romance between the characters, which didn't develop as much as I expected.

Nonetheless, Jana Denardo has a good writing style and Cassadaga Nights recovered from this detail after a couple of chapters, coming back to a balance on the topics that kept me interested until the end. In general, it's a nice story to pass the time and laugh with the occurrences of two characters who, although idealized, are not perfect.
